Hi,

I received a shipment from Sunset Models today.  It was packed in a small FLAT rate box, but I was charged $15.00 for shipping!  Small FLAT rate boxes don't cost that much to ship.

Now to the ERR products.  I received a Cruise Commander, and AC Commander, Double Fat Boy Speaker in baffle, and a few misc. parts.  There was absolutely NO paperwork of any kind as to instructions etc.  No paperwork pointing you to a website for installation help, nothing.  This is my first experience with ERR products.  I was extremely disappointed NOT to receive even a token of help from Sunset Models to point me to the website containing installation instructions.  For the cost of these modules, the price of one sheet of printed paper referring you to a website would not break the bank.  Too bad there is only one place to purchase ERR products, as far as I know, today.

There was an invoice copy, included.  It could have contained a brief paragraph helping a person get going.

Okay, jump on me and my ignorance!

Second tab from the bottom says "Installations". Click it and the landing page has a hyperlink to the install manuals.

Installation Manuals are available on-line. You can Print and Save them for future reference. They are updated from time to time with more current information. But if this is the first time for you to install your ERR upgrade boards, we suggest you get advice from experienced Installers / Dealers. Information can also be found on the OGR Forum, or at the Dealers that have a long history of upgrading many different products.

Our products normally are straightforward to install, however many folks opt to have the upgrades installed by one of the service centers listed on our DEALERS link.

Thanks for you reply!

Can anyone tell me the family of connectors used on the ERR boards?  I need to purchase some female pins, and accompanying connectors.  Boards don't come with connectors.

I will say this, the boards appear to be top shelf quality all the way!  My first installation is replacing the TMCC Version zero .zero in my NOS Lionel TMCC C&O yellow belly Hudson.  I will get a can motor for this engine from Timko.  It is drop and play supposedly.  A friend told me the railsounds in the tender were pretty good and would not need to be upgraded.  Any comments on that?

A couple of points Don. ERR hasn’t included paper manuals since Jon Z was an independent. Scott did not redesign the website, its essentially the same one that Jon Z created almost twenty years ago. Lionel still owns ERR products and licenses them to Scott. There are a number of dealers you can buy ERR products from. Some even discount.

I am looking for the family of connectors for functions like the electro couplers, and the RailSounds connector, for this and other projects.  I know the little green screw connectors cover any wires needed to fully use the ERR product.  I have some older Lionel Command upgrades that do NOT have the screw connectors on the boards, and you must use connectors in the same family as the ones on the ERR boards.  One of the boards in particular controls 2 electro couplers.  They are a handy board that can be repurposed to control lights or a smoke generator (low current) etc.

The connectors on the ERR boards are mostly JST-EH and JST-PH connectors, depending on which board and specific connector position you're talking about.  Also, the black 4-pin connector on the Cruise Commander M is the Molex MicroFit 3mm connector series.

I use the Engineer PA-09 crimp tool for these connectors.  I also have the IWISS 28-20AWG(0.08-0.5mm²) Micro Open Barrel Crimping Plier IWS-2820M which works with them as well.

Which board are you referring to that doesn't come with connectors?  Although some connectors may be necessary, like the coupler connectors for the Cruise Commander, usually the required connectors and cables are supplied with the boards.

Don- I did my first ERR upgrade last year in a RMT Beep. The install was relatively straight forward and the instructions are clear. Yes- you have to download and print them out but that seems to be the way of the world now.

Get the matching JST plugs and the crimping tool. It will make things go much faster.

Gunrunner John is an expert on these and he was happy to offer advice when questions came up. I have several more on the schedule to be done including an AC commander and another mini.

Here's the thread I had started on my BEEP. I basically followed John's plan for his BEEP.

Good Luck,

Bob

PS- John is a ERR dealer too......
