Short Diesel Horn Blast on DCS

Use the DCS soft-keys (S1-S5) under the display. These buttons control the function listed above each one on the LCD.

 

The one labeled "SFS" (Start Forward Sound) on the LCD above it will give you the two short blasts you're looking for. If you don't see it, press the button labeled "->" to see more key assignments

 

(the SRS gives you three for reverse, and SXS gives you the grade-crossing long-long-short-long)

Also, you can change the order of the function keys on the display so the ones you use most frequently are on the first screen.  To do that, press that arrow key until you see the MORE and then hit that key.  You'll get the whole list that the locomotive supports, and you can move them around in the list.  The first 15 show up as hotkeys when you scroll through the buttons with the arrow key.

Just to round out your list "Engine Sound 1" (S01) is usually a single short blast.

The limitations of the horn button is one of the few things I dislike about DCS.  As mentioned above, the soft keys will give you the forward, reverse, and crossing (on newer engines) signals.  However, the soft keys make what could have been a nice interactive feature a mechanical action; one quick press and you get the correct sound. Newer engines like yours are better.  I have a lot of older MTH engines, and they don't have the crossing signal and you just can not do it with the horn button.   However, the quilling function on newer engines is so-so, difficult for me to work.  This is one area I would like MTH to improve.

If You like DCS I Really Recommend Barry's book "The DCS Companion", available on the MTH website.

It has everything you need to know about using DCS and is well explained with many pictures.

Personally, I think MTH should give Barry a fat royalty check every quarter and include a electronic copy of it with each DCS system.

Not sure how Barry feels about that tho...
