This is my method for making the modifications. The reefers and freight cars use the same trucks. First I install NW shortline 33 inch 1/72 wheels with more scale like flange. My advice here is put masking tape over the truck springs so you don't lose them if they fly out. If you look at the truck it will be intuitive how to change the wheels.
Now for the Kadees. You'll have to have a cutoff wheel and a 1/16th drill, small file, and a small clamp. Unfortunately the trucks are riveted together and you need to do some cutting of the bolsters to clear the kadee draft box.
1. Remove the truck by unscrewing it.
2.Remove the C clamp holding the coupler mounting pin. Because the truck is riveted together and to avoid taking out the wheels, which still makes it almost impossible to remove the coupler. Cut the uncoupling bottom coupler pad where it's shown. If you just cut off the coupler shank then this tap drops down and shorts against the third rail while running. Picture 5 shows all the guts removed.
3. We now have to cutoff part of the truck frame as it will interfere with the coupler draft box. In fact you can't even install the truck.
Install the Kadees I use 805s as they are readily available, metal and don't come uncoupled. Some hints though, use a small clamp to hold the coupler to the draft box and a tooth pick to hold the draft spring to slide into position. The PS1s have flat flus mounting surfaces to mount the couplers and some cars don't such as the reefers. Shim accordingly paint and then install the coupler. Use a 1/16th drill bit and appropriate screws.
Enjoy close coupling and scale looks.
Sure hope this helps someone to try it.
