I wanted to clean the wheels on my MTH Premier Santa Fe ABA locos, so I powered the leading A-unit (upside down) with my KW transformer, and it ran fine. (Had to turn down the smoke volume after a few seconds, though.) Then I tried the same procedure with the trailing A-unit, but it will not run.
Is the trailing A-unit supposed to run by itself (conventional), as the leading A-unit?

Does it have motors in it? That would determine if it should run or not.
The trailing A unit does have motors but the electronics are in the lead A and the trailing A gets its power through the tether from the lead A. If you keep the units tethered while upside down, the trailing A should run, allowing you to clean the wheels.
Almost correct. The Trail A has electronics too, a slave board. It should not run on its own as Gregg stated. G

Flip them both upside down and tether them, then the trailing unit will run. 
You should be able to connect the lead unit to the trailing unit and leave the B unit out.
