I bought and installed a lightening and thunder module on my layout. I think that it was offered by ITT products but it has an unltra bright LED which flashes to simulate lightening, followed by several thunder booms and the sound of heavy rain falling. I have it hidden towards the rear of the layout in a valley behind a couple of bridges and it's very realistic. The button to operate it is where kids can push it and they are just delighted with the effect. Great way to keep the young ones interested a bit longer.

I have a little Chihuahua that's scared to death of thunder so Nope.
Poor little guy would be sitting in my lap shaking and peeing all over me.

I have purchased quite a few sound modules from George over at ITT Products. All of them have performed outstandingly. They are easy to hook-up, because they will work at multiple voltages in either AC or DC. They are priced reasonable and George will also load custom sound files if requested, up to 50 seconds in length. I have many satisfied customers that are using these products.

A really neat sight/sound effect is the Dept.56 set of 3 fireworks. The booming is in sync with the flashing sprays of lights going off. These (2 sets) have been a BIG hit on my layout when the room lights are off. There are some on eBay right now. Try to get them for about $25. each if you can. They were only made for a few years in the late 1990s.
Here is mine in action...
The sound boards are plug and play.....
The board is just inside the castle walls....
A fellow club member and I were kicking around the idea of adding a little something to the club's layout. Right next to the lift bridge, where a lot of the museum's visitors like to stop and chat with that day's operators, is a Lionel Rural Freight Station that would be an ideal spot to place a WS's "Jug Band" on the platform with two different sound modules( Oh Susana & Doda ).
Thanks for the input.
