The rumors have been verified - Southern RR definitely had a 4-6-4 that plied the rails 'back in the day'. We now have photographic evidence of her pulling a short freight haul through some beautiful scenery and across several magnificent trestles. A couple of us took a road trip Friday to a private layout near Baton Rouge La. to capture these images. The fellas really have a nice setup in a 45' x 65' building with large sweeping curves, well laid Atlas track and fantastic scenery. The scenery is much more prominent and less cluttered than most of our layouts from what I've seen over the years. There are several industrial areas but they are interspersed by vast expanses of rock, forest, and rivers. Good group of guys too! The owner's granddaughter called it "the Anaconda" because it wound around.

Sam - thanks for showing my model of the mysterious Southern Rwy. Hs-1 Hudson, especially in such a nice setting, the equally mysterious and seldom-photographed Louisiana Mountains. It makes the I-10 drive from L.A. (Lower Alabama) that I took all worthwhile.

The layout is really outstanding (it needs to be in a magazine article). Cleanest track that I have ever seen - so clean, in fact, that the pickup rollers on the Hs-1 were cleaner where they touched the rails than they were before the 20-minute run.

I am not kidding.
