I posted this on the real trains forum and didn't receive any response. Maybe someone on this forum can answer my question. Why is it that on spine cars the fifth wheel is facing backwards in relation to the way a fifth wheel faces on a semi tractor? Any response will be appreciated. Thanks.

Recall that being because of how they are loaded.
Good question Rick. My thinking is it is a safety factor while in transit and also maybe easier to access the fifth wheel to load and unload the trailer.
When the trains stop and start the tires on trailers would roll, so perhaps it catches the pin more effectively.
