I have a LionChief Plus 2-8-2 Mikado that has squeaked from day one. I have oiled every rotating, sliding or otherwise movable part, but the squeak persists. I removed the boiler, re-oiled every part from the top. I turned off the sound, the smoke and run it alone on the track, but the squeak persists. It's become more of a whine than a squeak more recently. It only does this in the forward direction, not in reverse. Running it in reverse, it is dead silent.

Any ideas out there? Should I dip into a bucket of oil? I am about to retire it because of the noise.

I'd start with cleaning well then looking for a pivot or rub area producing black oil more quickly. Lifting up slightly till the wheels spin and/or shifting side pressure off the drivers with a finger to see if it disappears. Finally removing rods and trucks to find it by process of elimination. My last squeeker turned out to be a trailing truck wheel and I stopped oiling it till it went away. My present seems to be a rod. I'll sand and champer hole soon.

I had a similar issue with an MTH E8.  The issue wound up being a poorly machined part.  I had to do quite a bit of surgery to figure it out and ultimately fix it.

I hate to make this suggestion, but I would start by rotating each axle on the pilot and rear trucks to see if you can get it to squeak.  From there remove the motor so you can turn the drive wheels by hand to see it you can get them to squeak.  From there, remove the drive rods and repeat.  Of course, if you can't get it to squeak by just removing the motor, doing the drive rods won't help.

With my E8, 1 machined surface was a bit rough.  The squeak only happened when there was pressure (from direction) on the rough edge.

If it's new, you might want to see if your dealer can swap it out for you.

Best of luck!

My video maker (my smart phone) seems to be dead just now.   It's only as smart as the owner, and is unable to recharge itself when left alone for a few days.  Anyway, I can make a video, but I do not know how to post it.  I can attach it to an email (I think).

If you can attach it to an email, email it to me. My email is in my profile

Normally you use the attachment tool at the bottom of the composer. But is it an Android Bob? If so, try Firefox as the browser(free-google store), and a FF add-on called phoney (Mozilla site, free).

Set the add-on to "android tablet"(once) and "request desktop" for each page. Waiting for each page to fully load, and turning the screen on its side(very important), usually brings up the attachment tool and the composing tools at the top of the composer. It also brings up the recent post column to the right.

Only load one pic or video at a time, or the queue gets stuck and locks up.

It is hit or miss. If lots of video is posted on a long page it takes forever to load & show up, if at all, but mostly it works.
