Standard Gauge Clearance question

I know this has been discussed before I can't seem to locate the answer. Could someone tell me the Standard Gauge minimum clearance between center rail to fascia at the edge of a layout? (I have an 087 elongated loop) I seem to remember reading 2.5" but that looks very close. I will never have a Brute but the largest equipment I plan on having is a 381E, 400E and the State Cars. Thanks

I do not like living on the edge . Since you're wanting the larger units go with at least 5.0". Since you're at 087, I do not foresee any problems.
