The 78/078 Block Signal, 80/080/80N Semaphore, 84/084 Semaphore and 99/099/99N used the same basic casting. The 82/082/82N Semaphore had another bump up on the base P/N 82-29, this unit had a thermal delay to stop and then restart the train. The 78/80/84 family used Lionel P/N 80-30. The 99 family used 99-38.

Tebolt, Olsen and others offer replacement bases.

Pappy,

I agree that good original die cast bases can be found. 'Orange' had a high survival rate, 'Wine' 1% chance, 'Dark Green' 1% chance, 'Terra Cotta' high, 'Light Red' high.

My experience of over 40 years of collecting these beasties.

Ron,

There are times when I've found good used parts on eBay. If the OP wants to go that way, however, he/she must know what they're looking at. Just thought

Be sure you can get the casting before you start. TBolt does not list them nor does Olsens in their downloadable parts list or Jeff Kane and a few others. The only source in recent years has been Trickle and he has no web page. Maybe someone has one of their flyers and can forward the phone number. Also be sure the casting is of hard zinc and not lead or it will bend easily and the screw holes will strip out.

I strongly recommend Dave Trickel, I have bought a lot of cast parts from him and he is pleasant to work with and the castings are excellent.  Sometimes, he has time to clean up the castings and they are ready to go: other times the castings arrive needing a little trimming and cleaning up before use, not a problem at all.

He does not list the semaphores, but as Ron pointed out above, if it is an 80 or 84 semaphore, it is the identical base on the 78 and 99.

Click on the scans to enlarge, to read the part numbers and prices.
