Early Lionel Standard Gauge Electric Locomotives is the topic for the next session. The next session will be Sunday March 4, 2011 at Bruce Greenberg's home in Alexandria, Virginia.  Please bring your Lionel locomotives 33, 34, 38, 42, 50, 53, 1910, 1911 and 1912 so that you can compare your pieces with those of others.  For more information contact Bruce Greenberg at 703-461-6991 or brucecgreenberg1@gmail.com

Bruce,

This is a wonderful idea.  I do not collect or study early Lionel... though this might aim me down this path.

When you get to the 20's and 30's, drop me a line. I might could offer some information...and some materials for photography.

Rob,

Thank you for your encouragement.

Early Lionel locomotives are fascinating because of the rapidity of change and the visibility of change on locomotive undersides.   Early Lionel is challenging to study because of the relatively small number of surviving pieces and the likelihood that some pieces have been modified.

We plan to turn our attention in June to later Lionel Standard Gauge.  On June 2, 2012 we will have study session in Alexandria devoted to Lionel 8, 10, 318 and 380.  We welcome your participating from afar.

Bruce

This is an exciting endeavor on your part, and perhaps the most  meaningful study ever undertaken by a Forum member.  If you ever have a meeting regarding 400e's, I have one that was displayed in Lou Redman's home before and after his death.  His daughter Carol provided me pictures of it being displayed on Lou's mantel as well as a history of whom he acquired it from, etc.  I do not imagine it is a rare variation, but I figured it may be of interest to you as well as the provenance provided by Carol.  I sure wish you could find someone competent to do a GREENBERG BOOK of the Modern Era while the trail is still warm!!!
