I've been having a heck of a time adding engines to the remote, not a new problem and have always had problems with adding engines to the DCS remote on past layouts. This layout is a 4x8. Two unconnected loops with one loop having two sidings. Power is provided with 2 MTH Z1Ks DCS is V4.01. Proto2 and Proto3 engines have difficulty. All Proto2 engines have BCRs. Someones does it only take 2 attempts to get engines to add, sometimes about half a dozen or more.

I picked up a number of engines from repair. Ran fine for my repairman after repair, ran fine on my LHS layout (all under DCS loading into respective remotes instantly) and run fine AFTER struggling to add engines. DCS Signal is 10s all the way around. Track is clean. It should not be so difficult to add an engine on such a basic layout. Any ideas for getting it to work reliably all of the time? Not looking for temporary fixes.

There were issues adding engines with early DCS 4.0x releases prior to 4.10. A usually effective workaround was to tether the remote to the TIU by connecting a 4-conductor telephone handset cable (the curly one) between the TIU's Remote Input port and the base of the remote.

A permanent fix was to upgrade to DCS 4.10 or 4.20.

This and a whole lot more is all in MTH’s “The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition", available for purchase as an eBook or a printed book at MTH's web store!

Barry,

Thanks. GOod to know it is a bug in the system. With 10s all the way around, a very basic, small loop, and clean track, I couldn't think of anything else that would cause this. My previous layout never had problems adding to the remote but the layout before that, less complicated than the most recent one, also had major issues adding engines to the remote but everything ran fine. Glad to know it is in the software and there is a fix for it. I'll get a phone cord as I'm not planning to remove the TIU anytime soon.

Version 4.10 Fixes

  • Corrects bug in engine add routine
  • Read feature reliability improved
  • Engine add routine improved to increase reliability
  • If running the remote in Speed Operating mode – The remote will switch to Normal Operating mode when performing operations that require two-way communication with the TIU/Engine then switch back to Speed mode
  • Corrects sticky relay issue on AIU
