How abouy Krazy Ken's Car Car Town kit # 933-3312 from Walthers?
Hello everyone.
Thanks for starting off Alan. Here are some pictures of a steel mill I constructed for a fellow in Connecticut.
Awesome blast furnace complex Alan!
Alan,
Great Blast Furnace and Cast House! Is it scale and if not, what is the compression?
Anthony and I are planning on building a few in the very near future.
Dave
Weathered car photos were moved to my link below and headed for ebay.
Alan wonderful job on your blast furnace complex!!
jackiejr....I really like the way the water falls from the upper to lower water level. How did you make the falls...?
Alan
Anthony & Bill,
Thank you.
David,
The model is 1/4 scale. The blast furnace is is 6 or 8 inches in diameter at the base. I am sure a real blast furnace is much larger. I can send you the sketches I used to construct this. A great source to construct a model like this is a book that was put out by Dean Freytag on Steel Mills and the modeling of them. Dean was from the midwest and had a large HO scale steel mill complex.

Good morning everyone
Alan your avatar photo looks great and so does the photo of the theater.
The rest of you guys once again have posted incredible photo's
Here's something a little different, I made from scratch this lighted number board enclosure. It's made with clear pine and finished birch. Then I applied walnut stain and a gloss finish.
Alex
Anthony & Bill,
Thank you.

Thanks for the info Alan. A book I have that is specific to the J&L blast funaces at the Aliquippa works has furnace dimensions of 26.5' to 28.5' hearth diameter, and ~ 30' Bosh diameter. I am assuming those are both measured near the bottom of the furnace, so your 6"-8" diameters for your furnace sounds just about right to me.
Thanks,
Anthony

Nice work guys,Mike your layout is looking better all the time,Sirt I could use those LV cars in this tuesday nights running program with the Greenville gang. Chet
Alan....I remember Dean Freytag.....he was a great modeler that passed away a couple of years ago on Christmas Day. Your steel mill model is beautiful!
Alex....thanks!! I finally got around to posting an avatar but didn't want to scare anybody so decided to add some beauty to it!! By the way, I like your number board.
Jackie....thanks for the quick reply. The water fall looks great and I just happen to have two of those water effects kits. I will be copying your example!!
Nice work everyone!
Alan
Great job All!
Alan I love the steel mill/blast furnace! I had the opportunity to vist Dean's layout before he passed and it was dismantled. He truly was a master!
Someday I hope to have the time and money to construct a similar scene. They are amazing models!
Quote Patrick H.
Since the Sunday showcase is starting a day early this week, Heres 2 presidential engines for a day later.
Patrick...I hope me starting the showcase late Saturday night hasn't caused a problem. If so, I apologize. I have been starting it late Saturdays because of Church and visiting with my Mom in the nursing home and didn't want to disappoint those that enjoy the showcase on Sunday morning. Folks, please let me know if you would prefer me to not start it so early.....
Thanks,
Alan
Alan, If late Saturday evening works for you then it is fine with me. 1 vote in your favor.
Jack
Wil,
I was introduced to Dean from the people at Plastruct. We both have designed kits for them. I spoke to him and he told me about his book on steel mills and I was lucky enough to find it in a hobby store. Without that book (providing pictures and descriptions about how a steel mill works), I could have never created this mill.
Dean was a great person.

Thanks to all who contributed to this thread, all very enjoyable photos!
Steve, I love the New Haven cars. Based on your time frame, those would be pretty old and show it!
Alan, cool facility! Must be going to a big layout.
Jackiejr, I love the feel of the scenery with the tinplate, and yeah, that waterfall is superb!
Alex, that lighted number board is sweet!
Alex,
I love that lighted number board. Great job.
Thanks Alan, Jeff, and Joe for the kind words.
Another great Sunday scenic showcase
Thanks, Alex
Jim...sorry...... I am just a little taken back by your reply only because the tone of your post makes me feel I stepped in where perhaps I didn't belong or broke some unspoken rule...?? But..as you quoted me, I did ask didn't I. Frankly Jim, recently there were times the showcase didn't get started until quite late and so I took it upon myself to start it especially since some of the others you mentioned above had not been posting as often. I did this to show support. If I displaced someone, this was never expressed and was not intended....just thought I was helping a great thread by starting it. AND....since it was late at night just before midnight, I figured the thread would be up and ready for those that stay up after the 12o'clock hour. Yep, Sunday begins right after the stroke of midnight.....but what the heck do I know, I'm on Central Standard Time!!
Anyway....I'll go back to my corner...
Alan
Dont be so sensitive Alan, their is no rules for who starts it. You post good pics and i really enjoy them each Saturday , i mean Sunday late morning after church. (Hope your laughing too..)
My take even though i only been contributing a few years now.
Its sorta like Christmas presents for Christmas morning to me to see some really awesome craftsmanship in progress to finish ,some thats just mind bogling. Even though my stuff and picture taking isnt that great , when i get close to finishing something i think is pretty good, I cant wait for Sunday morning even though i cant post it till i get home. (Maybe i need to get a life.)
That being said ,you can start every Sunday morning as far as im concerned except January 30th weekend , thats my birthday and i get up at 5am so no one beats me to it.(except this year someone did hmmm) Thats why I gave you the Presidential treatment. LOL What fun is it if we cant give a little ribbing once in a while. Its all in fun.I hope you can come with Alex this year.
Thanks Patrick....
Alan

Thanks Chet , Mike
Bob & Alan - thanks for the kind words!
Another week of great work by everyone!
Alan A. Thanks for making the effort to get this thread started on the weekends. I enjoy seeing all of the work that gets posted here.
Also many thanks to all the people who post here and share all the wonderful creative work. I don't have the talent that so many many people here do but I do enjoy viewing the displays and trying to learn from everyone.
As to the time situation I am more of a night owl even in Eastern Time Zone but I see the post sometimes before going to bed early Sunday morning and for me its nice because on Sunday mornings we have church and meet friends for breakfast and stuff at home to do so its usually mid afternoon before I get my first "FIX" on OGR
Alan I am not sure where Sunday morning really starts as far as this thread is concerned. Is it in Eastern Time zone orwhat about the guys in England or Australia or the NA West Coast or the International date line.
Again Alan thank you and anyone who starts these wonderful threads and I hope we can ALL ENJOY them at any hour of the day or night.
