Sunday Scenic Showcase January 24, 2021

Hey guys. I took a few weeks off to refresh my batteries. Here are a few pics of my new layout addition that I can now share. For everyone that gets the magazine, you can read my article this month (RUN 316) that documents the completion of my layout. The main feature was 3 months ago in RUN 313. My final area I called "North Platte". While it looks nothing like the real town, it evokes a lot of memories for me. Enjoy the pics and have a great Sunday.

Last of the layout facia is now installed and painted.  Doing test fitting of harbor structures:

This simple commercial structure was built from a craftsman kit as I approached completion of my 12’-by-8’ layout, and sits beside the outer loop of track. There was not sufficient space for a larger or more elaborate building in this location, so this model, with its trackside exterior staircase, was included. There are no large industrial buildings on either of my layouts since I have chosen to model small town and rural scenes. Nothing has been changed on this layout since it was completed in 2004.

Making progress on the tunnel for the back corner. Plaster cloth is done and I put a coat of paint on it yesterday to cover up all the white. Ground cover and trees are next.

Just completed a scratch build. This is a wood ice house that replaces a Berkshire Valley plaster ice house that was damaged during shipping to a customer.

The 'decals' are normal bond paper printed with the printer's 'best settings' thinned with 150 grit sand paper then glued to the building with white glue.

Thanks Don. I like bashing these paper prints to give them more detail. I don't think I'd have the patience to scratch build the whole thing.

First, I very much enjoy your posts showing your beautiful trains and modeling.

My layout is an old, not a new, one, but it is slowly evolving into one focusing on The Put. See simultaneous thread entitled Modeling a Real Railroad under Scenery & Structures. Arnold

A whole bunch of excellent projects on display this week.  Unbelievable craftsmanship on the part of all contributors this week.

Working through some of my areas. I'm a big Dungeons and Dragons nerd, so I am using the minis on my layout (almost the correct size).

Your layout is shaping up very nicely, Pete! That harbor scene is really going to be spectacular.

Hi Joe,

What did you use for the roofing material on the ice house?

It looks very realistic to me.

BTW, nice job on the signage. I’ve tried the same technique and usually end up getting a little too heavy handed. OK for a weathered sign, not so good for a new one.

I've never tried that technique but remember reading about it.  Once I get to scenery I plan on giving it a try.  I even asked Jim P. if he ever tried it using "onion skin" paper but he hadn't given it a try.
