Excellent work as always, Alan!  This week I'm working on a project to improve the looks and level of detail of an MTH RailKing bay-window caboose.  Here's an out-of-the-box photo...

imageimageimage

The project will include:

  • replacing the hideous-looking (& non-prototypical) stock MTH trucks with the new Atlas roller-bearing caboose trucks with scale-thickness side frames (pictured above).  A secondary benefit to doing this will be the car riding lower on its trucks, further improving its appearance.
  • painting the window frames to represent the prototypical aluminum frames.
  • painting other details such as the under frame, smokestacks, radio antenna, etc.
  • light weathering to represent a car that's been in service for a year or two.

Shown below, the car has been completely dis-assembled and masked to do the window frame painting...

And here's a shot after the window frames and other details have been painted...

More progress photos to follow.

Alan,  is that roof cardstock ! I was wondering how you were able to cut the edges of the tiles like that in wood,  then as I looked closer I thought perhaps it was cardstock  !!

Hi Robert. The substructure of the roof is mat board like they use to frame pictures. The shingles are peel and stick.
