Can you put steam style wheels on a super motor? My question is this , I just got a supermotor in need of some work very cheaply and am toying around with building a camelback for my layout. I was wondering if there would be a problem with the steam wheels and rods on the supermotor.

Absolutely, the only difference between the two wheel types is the tapped hole for the side rods.

Thank you Gandy, I just need to get some parts together and come up with a basic design, maybe take some idea's from a 400 or even simpler a # 5 or 6 loco . I saw one here on the forum last year but cannot remember who made it and it has bugged me ever since.

The only issue would be if you intended to use a Lionel steamer frame. The Super Motor has round motor side spacers where the Bil A Loco has square ones that I believe are in a different position as well. These will not work with the latch in motor mounting the Bild A Loco would accommodate. If you are making a custom frame where you'll be mounting the motor using screws and tabs similar to an electric outline loco you'll be fine.

Just make sure you use a "small gear" post 1925 supermotor... Small gear electric and steam wheels are the same save the counterweight and rod boss.
Rob,
Thanks for the info, the supermotor I just got off ebay for 30 bucks, it is in very good shape and it is the small gear version . It must have been from a 402 or 408 as it has the pivot mount on top of it where the e unit would be. I will wire up a manual reverse switch to it for the real early loco look. The motor needs bushings and axles and wheels and a real good cleaning. But otherwise is in great shape for only 30 bucks.
