Hello, again... It'sa me, Mario.

I have yet another inane question (I do ask some weird ones!).

I recent purchased a K-Line NYC heavyweight Pacemaker RPO to complete my set, from a well-known seller and re-seller in trains.

It was labeled as C-8 (yes, both the owners are members) and it came in the mail and there is surface rust on just about every exposed surface (wheelset axles, hand rails,  grab irons, ladders...). I won it for a very reasonable sum.

Now, here are the questions for everyone here:

1.  Is there a way that I can mask off the grab irons and hand rails and use a black paint pen to cover them?

2.  Is there a way to safely remove the hand rails and grab irons (press fit?) And then paint them off the car?

3.  Should I send it back and wait for another one to make its way to the surface?

Is that I've been waiting for over a year for this car and am reluctant to send it back for a refund if its an easy fix... But, since the other 5 cars in the set (that I got last January) really are C-8, I'd really like them to match...

I'd like some thoughts (and if you have the scale Pacemaker heavyweight RPO and willing to part with it, please let me know and this can be over very quickly!)

Thanks so much!

Cut a narrow strip of plastic from a food container (like strawberries or something like that) and slip it under the handrail while you touch is up. Just keep the plastic strip between the pen and the car body. I wouldn't worry about the wheel treads or flanges as operating will grind them clean. The wheel faces can be touched up with a paint pen.

Certain K-line passenger consist cars are showing up with less frequency and at higher prices. Unless it's something you just can't live with, hang on to the car...at least until you can grab one in better shape. I got hold of an Atlas engine I had been trying to find for over four years and had the couplers disintegrate when I took it out of the box (zinc rot.) No way on this planet was I going to send that back. I'm just going to fix the pilots and put scale couplers on it.

Ok, I just put it all back together... After sanding and scrubbing and replacement screws (thanks ACE!) and pulling the grabirons off and painting it all with Rustoleum satin black.

And the RPO looks good... I pull out the other 5 Pacemaker heavyweights and find that some have the same surface rust on the handrails and grab irons, and they've r been on the track! So, over the next 5 weekends, I'll be doing on car at a time, pulling off the grab irons and painting them and replacing the screws... And probably sell them and replace them with those with full interiors!

Uggggh!

I'll post some pics tomorrow.

Thanks,
Mario
