The layout that I'm building has 4 - 072 switches and 9 - 022's.  My plan was to work out the kinks in the track, switches, UCSs etc and then ballast the track to give it a bit of realism.  All of the switches were purchased used but I cleaned, lubed and bench tested them all prior to installation.  I'm really having second thoughts about ballasting the track because of the seemingly endless problems with the switches.  Perhaps my expectations aren't realistic, after all these were meant to be toys but the continued need to adjust and fiddle is really taking the fun out of it.

I've considered buying Ross switches to get past the problem but they represent a fair amount of bucks and I'm reluctant to spend that much without a fair certainty that they would end the majority of switch issues.

Is this just a part of the "fun" or is it reasonable to expect the Lionel switches to maintain some level of dependability without daily attention.  Apologies for the "venting" it's been a long frustrating day of installing and removing switches from the layout to attempt repairs and adjustments.

If you restore the switches according to my directions in this thread, you will have perfectly working switches:

022/711 switch operating pblms

Look for it with Google.

I have about 150 022 switches and 15 711/721/072 switches.  I build layouts on the floor.  The largest layout I have had used 50 022 switches.  After suitable modification, the trains would run for an hour or more without derailing.

41Woodie,

Chuck gave you one of the fixes, use the K-Line (RMT) Super Snap Switches.  I will give you another, transition in and out of FasTrack Command Control Switches, both provide bullet proof running, of all 3 Rail Trains, including Tin Plate.

Dave, I appreciate the suggestion about the FasTrack, I'm an old guy and just prefer the tubular O gauge track appearance over FasTrack

I've read your service/maintenance directions and followed them in servicing the switches prior to installation.  The problems I'm experiencing are mainly electrical not mechanical.  Can you suggest a method to detect internal shorts in the servo itself?  What I really need is a properly functioning switch to use as a comparison when trouble shooting a problem unit.  It's hard to make a diagnosis when I'm not absolutely sure where I should be finding continuity between various components of the switch.
