Happy Switcher Sunday everyone. I am pitching in again for Rich Murnane (MURNANE) who is busy moving his family. We wish him good luck!

As July 4th approaches, I thought I should say how lucky we are to live in a country that allows us to enjoy our freedom and to a lesser extent, things like our love of trains and specifically our switchers.

So, if you have anything patriotic switcher-wise, that would be super appropriate, but feel free to post anything that looks like a switcher.

This little guy is a fireless cooker, build by H.K. Porter Company in October 1936. Seen here, it was switching at Beaunit Corporation at Elizabethtown, TN.

While not patriotic, here is a vintage ad for an American Locomotive Co. 0-8-0 switcher, this one shown is for the New Haven. My dad worked briefly as a fireman for the New Haven after WWII, trained for steam and diesel.

snappy switcher

Have a great weekend and hope you are able to enjoy lots of good barbecued food!

My gosh!  Look at the size of that tender on a switcher!

Tom, I agree wholeheartedly about barbecued food.  I eat barbecue at least once a week.

Yay SWSat is on!

The last few weeks have been pretty rough for the New York Subway system and problems at Penn Station. My local subway line had a big accident this week and I was on a train on another line on Thursday that was held up because of a misalignment on the Broadway Bridge that  carries the 1 train into the Bronx. Luckily we held at the 207 st stop and could watch from the platform. The work train was coming off the 1 line local track because of that misalignment. This yard does seem very model railroady with the spaghetti look and Steep grades.

There was a lot happening in the yard there. I got some cool IPhone shots. My 5 year old was not as happy.

My Daughter got tired of waiting so we walked to Inwood Park and the Spyten Dyvel Station is across the river. I caught this Metro North road Switcher running light along the old NYC main about to go through the cut. I think they had Ben checking on the lift bridge.

On another day at the site of the NYC 69 St float yard on the west side lives the stuffed and mounted BEDT alco #25 in disguise. One can peek inside with the little IPhone lens.

Happy SWSat and Happy 4th to all.

Train time still at 0 here on the RSJ&B. Still lurking around OGR though.

Thanks for starting us off Tom. Shout out to Rich- hope the packing is progressing on schedule.

Cool posts so far everyone, not sure if ALCO was thinking clearly when they classified that 0-8-0 as a switcher Tom.

Nice NYC Transit shots Andy. I sometimes forget that a good portion of the subway system is above ground. Looks like a busy yard. Those little low profile switchers look like the old FM Train Masters. Would be nice if someone made a model of one.

Good news that Gov. Cuomo declared a state of emergency for MTA this week. Maybe some stuff will finally get fixed. It appears that the LIRR Third Track project in Nassau County will move forward later this year too.

Gotta fire up the grill later.

It was a bit ironic that the Governor declared a State of Emergency for the subways and the very same day, Metro-North and the LIRR (for those not aware...also part of the MTA) had significant delays.

Good morning SSWAT friends!!  Great photos and information as always everyone .... thanks!!   I'm hitting the road in the next hour for North Carolina.  I plan to stop at the Virginia Museum of Transportation on the way back and see their Y3 which is on loan.   Y's were sometimes used as switchers at some coal mines, so I ( think  )  read in train magazine many years ago.   I'll  be sure to take many photos as I know there will be "real" switchers at the museum as well.  Tom - Thanks for pinch hitting for Rich today!  Have a wonderful 4th of July weekend everyone!!  Here are some photos of an 0-8-0 ( one of approx. 30 ) which the N&W bought from the C&O many years ago.  The C&O bought them new and only kept them for 2 years before selling to the N&W.   The N&W got a sweet deal!   The camera is tilted on the first photo which  makes the loco appear going up hill.  In actuality it's sitting level.IMG_0791-2IMG_0789-2

what is this? I'm guess by the look of the thing in the front it's a flame thrower?

Hope the move is going smoothly with Rich.

My work in progress 0-6-0 #1879 pulls a worktrain to get some run time. The PRR Cabin Car and 3559 were given to me by my late Uncle Jim, The Big Inch was a Christmas present from my youngest (incomplete of course).2560 was a bay find, needs a correct boom, and 1879 has been helped along with advice from MNCW and parts from Dennis Holler.

Dave,

Glad to play a small role in getting another switcher up and running! Keep up the good work.

The crane looks familiar Dave.

This one's all original. Still earning its keep.
