It's #SwitcherSaturday time!!!!

Lots of us out there love switchers (shifters, docksiders, yard goats, critters, etc.), so lets keep #SwitcherSaturday (a.k.a. SWSAT) rolling!

If you missed last week's SWSAT you should really go take a look, it was a ton of fun!

This week at the Murnane house...  NOTHING!!!

The Murnane family is going to be moving from Maryland to Fredericksburg Virginia! So... Rather than show pictures of trains in storage containers and pictures you've seen before, I'm posting some pictures of my friend ChessieMD's switching layout.

@ChessieMD  and I live close by and was nice enough to have us over last weekend for dinner. His grilled bratwurst was awesome but his switching layout is really awesome, I hope you like the pictures and I hope he doesn't mind me "highlighting" his layout this week, we've become great friends over the past few years and I'll miss being up the street from him terribly.  He's actually the person who introduced me to this forum!

I hope everyone has a nice weekend and if you get a chance - post some switcher stuff here!

All the best...Rich Murnane

p.s. Miss the post on Saturday? NO BIG DEAL, just keep posting pictures of your favorites until the next #SwitcherSaturday
p.s.s. I need volunteers to run "Switcher Saturday" for the next four weeks, who's volunteering? (please volunteer - before you are "Volun-TOLD")! :-)

- Switcher Saturday: 2017-July-01
- Switcher Saturday: 2017-July-08

All you have to do is start a new thread (topic), preferably before 8:30 am eastern (night before is OK) - under this same category (forum) and name it Switcher Saturday with the date (I use format above, no big deal if you don't).

Almost forgot...

My sister lives near Charlotte, North Carolina and she sent these pictures this week, taken in downtown Morresville, North Carolina.

From the "Bay State Milling Company" website: Bay State Milling is a family-owned company with a strategic intent to support the growth of the next generation of grain-based foods in North America by providing the leading array of plant-based ingredients.

They appear to have a facility in Mooresville NC, so I guess this critter is based out of there?  At first I was thinking it was on the roster at the NC Transportation museum, but according to these pictures it looks like it's actually doing work, so I'm thinking it is really in service.  Digging deeper I found this link which shows the other side of the engine (I think), but other than that I couldn't find much info on it - except for when I figured out that these guys were BSMX and then I found this link!  It appears we have a VO-1000M!

Nice detective work Rich. Good luck with the move. Hope all goes smoothly.

Yay SWSat is on!

Hope everyone had a good week. Rich, wow cool to see a Baldwin still running let alone making a living in the 21st century. DaveP I love that Raritan RR shot in the bridge.  Very nice.

This week I'm posting nothing crazy or only tangentially switcher related. I was playing around with some old gargraves switches on my window sill and took some pics of one of my K-line Plymouths. I like these little conventional  units. I think I have 4 of them. This Ford plant switcher, two Reading ones and a Strasburg.

The lighting in the window makes it easier to photograph this all black engine. I wish some manufacturer would come forward and re-release this model with some more modern control system. I would be willing to let go of the smoking ability for control.

Have a great weekend.

I believe I've posted these little guys before but I've got to agree with Andy, I like these Plymouths.IMG_0776IMG_0777

These are the only two I've got but would like more.  A while back I started a thread by asking if anyone knew who wound up with the tooling for these and had hoped someone would bring these back, but seeing the costs of other smaller offerings lately I don't know if I could pull the trigger on a new release.  Well back to e-bay if I want any more.

Hey,  Murname, I know you're busy this weekend, but I have a question about your friend ChessieMD's layout.  Specifically, the mountain backdrop.  I've been looking for something similar.  Do you know (or can you find out) where he bought It?  It would fit perfectly on my layout?  I'd really appreciate it.  E-mail me, please.

By the way, thanks for starting this thread.  It's one of my favorites.

Hi Rich, Hope your moving day goes well. Pack those trains extra careful and make sure you take them yourself.

I would be glad to take the first two Saturdays on your list unless someone already has requested them. Please let me know...

My contribution this week is my prewar Lionel #230 using first the "Carmine" effect and second, the "Silvered" effect on my laptop's Adobe Photoshop Express.

That is indeed an awesome layout....wait...what?

Rich will be missed, hoping Fredericksburg VA has Internet so we can continue his Saturday tradition...I'm sure that won't be a problem :-)

Thanks to Rich for all he does on the forum.

Good to see you running some Raritan equipment! Keeps the memory alive!

I have a lot of great memories of the Raritan River - I grew up in South River, so I can still remember when they used to do some switching in the small South River yard and the Serviss branch, watched from Hercules pool as they did moves inside the plant, as well as DuPont in Parlin at the station off Washington Road. Several times I got to help Danny Gamble 'turn' the South River draw into position. I was fortunate enough to get a tour of the shops at South Amboy. I also remember one day the locomotives were all in Parlin getting 'Conrailized' with big white 8000 series numbers and a white 'CR' on the nose. By then all the SW's were getting rusty and some were swapped with blue SW's

I hope your not joking. I would be thrilled if Williams made Rahway Valley equipment. It would go perfect with my RMT caboose.

I'm not joking. Go to YouTube to TCA 2017 spring meet Bachmann and you'll see in the presentation.  I can only remember 2.  Tropicana,Rutland.

Oh no sorry I didn't mean you. I meant Dave when he mentioned the Rahway Valley paint scheme. Unfortunately I just watched the video and RVRR isn't one of the paint schemes. I might try and contact Bachmann about this. See what they say.

Logan,

I spent considerable time trying to find just the right backdrop. The great thing about modeling the Rio Grande is it traveled thru some many different environments that it allows a broad range of modeling possibilities.  For me I have always had a love for railroading thru the harsh desert. Despite the unforgiving climate, there is a surprisingly fair amount of life and color. The backdrop needed to carry this concept. The width of my layout in some areas is just 18 inches or so. However, I wanted to produce the illusion of expanse and depth by finding a backdrop that photographed well, contained real shadowing and color. So in the photo below, just beyond those 20ft containers is where the layout ends. Despite that limitation, the backdrop produces the illusion of distance and depth.

Take a visit over to www.trainjunkies.com.  Very good selection for any scene you might want to compliment. They will also custom build a backdrop to your specific measurements and then invoice you via PayPal. I also recommend the self stick vinyl version. The color reproduction is fantastic and is a bit more forgiving than the matte version. The more important things the install was very easy. I simply peeled off the back and placed on my wall. Good luck!

Thanks, ChessieMD for the reply and the information.  It looks like that's the very thing I've been wanting.  My layout is based loosely on the old El Paso and Southwestern and your's and Arizona Desert look like what I need.  (It's hard to find good desert backdrops).
