It's Switcher Saturday Time!!!!

Lots of us out there love switchers (shifters, docksiders, yard goats, critters, etc.), so lets keep #SwitcherSaturday (a.k.a. SWSAT) rolling!

If you missed last week's SWSAT, you should go take a look, there was some great stuff posted!  https://ogrforum.com/...day-2018-december-15

This week we've got my Lionel 0-4-0 switcher (decorated with Angela Trotta Thomas graphics) doing Christmas tree duty at the Murnane house.

Also, here's a picture of my Hallmark ornament - Lionel B6 0-6-0 switcher, it's one of my favorite ornaments and never gets put on the tree (it's on a window sill this year).

Merry Christmas to those of you who celebrate and if you don't, well, Happy Festivas or Holidays or whatever your thing is!

All the best...Rich Murnane

p.s. Miss the post on Saturday? NO BIG DEAL, just keep posting pictures of your favorites until the next #SwitcherSaturday

p.s.s. I'm hoping to do my annual "Merry Christmas from the Murnane Family" video later today, if I can get the girls to do it again!  When I do, this link will be updated.

Good morning, Happy SWSAT and Merry Xmas!

I purchased this K-Line scale Long Island Railroad B6sb 0-6-0 switcher when it was first marketed in 2006. The B6sb was built by the PRR at Juniata between 1916 and 1940. From 1900 to 1966, the LIRR was owned by the PRR and numerous PRR engines ran on Long Island. The B6sb had 56-inch drivers, 205 psi boiler pressure, weighed 180,000 pounds and developed 36,140 pounds of tractive effort.

A precursor steam loco of the “Paris Lyon Mediterannée” company; This model built in the fifties is a very good representation of this type of locos; originally it was a side rail pick up engine but I converted it to center rail which make it more easier to use. I like very much those "old style" engines.

And an original drawing ot this type of engine

Yay! SWSat is in the on position!

Daniel I really enjoy your unusual, old and European contributions. The very early steam engines where the methods of propulsion are still being worked out I always find fascinating.

My contribution is a bit pedestrian in comparison. Here is my K-line BNSF MP15 with the Swoosh paint scheme.  This was one of the later Kline offerings and I think came out when the company was under Lionel control.

A package just showed up that I have not unwrapped yet. I now have a B&O C16a to go with my C16 project. So now have have model representation of  1/2 of the whole class of B&O 0-4-0 switchers. Since the whole C16 class had only 4 engines it is a bit tempting  to go for the whole enchilada.

Here is the familiar C16 with the as built saddle tank. Four were built like this.4373F1AE-31A3-461D-A6AB-2786AB16338A

Two of the engines were later modified removing the saddle tank and adding a tender. These two engines became the subclass C16a.

Surprisingly both these little engines have been popular in the hobby with many companies making models both of the two  in several scales. The saddlertank version being the most popular and easiest to recognize.

Have a great weekend. Safe travels and Happy Holidays. I can’t wait to see what you guys post.

Did someone say C16?

97 and 99 in B&O- two down two to go. (99 needs decals added to the tank)
These are MTH models. Rock solid little engines.

SWSAT is HAPPENING!!

Time to get my switcher on, BAY-BEEE!

From me ol' beloved Frisco I offer the following pic. This was taken in my old haunt of Fort Smith, AR on January 27, 1950. I was still over 2 years away from being born!

Irony: During my life's journey, I ended my working career making a living running Alco T-6's (which look a LOT like an Alco S-2) over those very rails (in Fort Smith's "South Yard") during my railroading years.

Destiny.

SLSF_292_FtSmithAR_012750

Happy SWSAT fellow Switcher Loonies and...

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Andre

P.S. Hey radio listeners... how about a TWIN SPIN today?

Great! Here's a dramatic artwork rendering from a cover of the old pulp rag "Railroad" magazine. Picture depicts a Frisco FM switching at Cherokee Yard in Tulsa, OK. It sort of reminds one that railroading takes place 24/7/365 regardless of whether you feel like it or not, or irrespective of the weather conditions. Neat old picture. I can remember nights/days like that out working on the rails. Yes, I miss it. No, I wouldn't go back if I could.

Regarding your B6 ornament, that is my favorite Lionel Hallmark ornament. Funny that you have yours on your window sill. Mine is there, too!

Andy it looks like you've edited your first post to include some more switchers.  Very nice package you received.

Johan with the selection of railroads in your photos it looks more like Christmas in New England than Finland.  Have a Merry Christmas my friend.  And the same to all my Switcher Saturday friends as well.

What a great model, cardboard is very interesting to use .... when you have the ability to do it.  That makes a great display piece, congratulations for your work.

MELGAR K Line did a great job on that locomotive. May have to expand someday and find one.

Builder's pic of Long Island #198

Dave,

Great pictures of LIRR steam.

#198 does not have a Belpaire firebox, so it may have been acquired prior to 1900, when the LIRR was still an independent company. The LIRR was purchased by the PRR in 1900, after which most LIRR steam came from the PRR. Also, note the slide valves (for steam admission - just above the cylinders) on #198 compared to the piston valves on the B6Sb model (below). #2015 ran on superheated steam - #198 did not - just saturated steam.

According to "The Long Island Railroad in the Pennsy Era" by Ron Ziel, #2015 was the only B6 to run (just briefly) on the LIRR. Photographs in his books show #2015 with a tendered lettered "PENNSYLVANIA" - not "LONG ISLAND" as on the K-Line model.

That falls under the category, "Great minds think alike" or something like that.

Here at work this weekend, no train fun, but  Thank goodness for an amazing array of switchers,  postings, pictures and stories all year long. Very entertaining and educational....

Arnold, Melgar, Silver lake, Coach joe, MNCW,  and all not mentioned at this writing, great  meeting you  and sharing  this year.

Murnane, you rock. Switcher Saturday rules.

Nice meeting you also LEROOF (and everyone else).

While not specifically "Switchers only," here is a Tom McComas Christmas video that is on YouTube...I posted the link on the weekend tinplate topic earlier today, which I thought others might like here. The nicely done song "A Lionel Christmas" by Phil Ambrose happens around 8 minutes in.

The next Toy & Train Show in White Plains, NY takes place on Sunday, January 27th. Maybe Arnold will start up a new topic to start his countdown.

Happy Switcher Saturday everyone and  Merry Christmas!!  I'm late to the party. TG Saturday is not over!

Just was able to capture a few shots of the Santa Special as it was in various stages of being decorated before leaving the Patsburg yards.   Baltimore and Annapolis SW9 hosts the Claus and the Mrs. on the front deck and a pair of Baldwin R16 Shark demonstrator, in a nice candy stripe livery, prepare to back down the track to connect to their waiting Christmas Special train.

Rich thanks for being at the throttle and doing whatever it takes to get us rolling each Saturday!  Your girls are terrific kids ... LOVE the video!

Great photos and videos everyone!!  I've enjoyed each one immensely!

Andy - go for it! Collect all 4 C16s!  What the heck ... you are half way there.

I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season!!  May you find switchers in your stocking and under your tree!  IMG_8569IMG_8574IMG_8591IMG_8584IMG_8597IMG_8616IMG_8626IMG_8581IMG_8590IMG_8611IMG_8578

Gussie, our afternoon Yardmaster at Caprock, Texas, sent Baloney Nose Taggart and the boys on the 201 switch job, over to the interchange spur with a Lone Star Hi Railers covered hopper (made empty by Triple-G Grain) which the SP local will pick up and take to Dalhart for re-loading.
