It's Switcher Saturday Time!!!!

Lots of us out there love switchers (shifters, docksiders, yard goats, critters, etc.), so lets keep #SwitcherSaturday (a.k.a. SWSAT) rolling!

If you missed last week's SWSAT, you should go take a look, there was some great stuff posted!
https://ogrforum.com/...day-2019-February-02

This week my pictures are of a postwar Lionel "Gang Car" (#50) which I received in a box of "dust and rust" trains
sent to me from my cousin's husband. I spent a little time on this one cleaning it up, got it running but
didn't get a chance to try out it's bump-and-run ability. I also need to pick up the figures for it, I see some on daBay which I'll likely buy.

The No. 50 Section Gang Car as shown on page 8 of the 1959 Lionel Consumer Catalog - price was only 7.95

IMG_5236IMG_5235IMG_5234IMG_5233

After doing some research on it, I found a note on the "Thor Trains" site that mentioned this motorized unit was very much a "fantasy train", a "train that never was" (no prototype) - but I can't help but wonder if there was some sort of prototype that drove the design for this critter.

I'm heading to a "Children's Expo" today at the Fredericksburg VA Expo Center, where my club will be running a 4x8 "tabletop" layout on display for all the kids to come look at.  Packed in the toolbox I use to bring trains back/forth places are my NYC Dockside Switchers (one MTH, one Lionel) and a bunch of "fun" freight cars, I'll take some pictures or video if I get the chance to run it.

Enjoy your weekend and when you get a chance - please post some switcher stuff here!

You know the rules:

1. if it's related to switchers (model switchers, prototypes, critters, switching yards, switching layouts) - we want to see it! Videos, Pics, Stories (true or fictional), poems, whatever!

2. if you miss the post on Saturday? NO BIG DEAL, just keep posting pictures of your favorites until the next #SwitcherSaturday

3. keep it friendly - we want this to be fun. (we haven't had any problems with grumpy trolls, I'd like to keep it that way)

All the best...Rich Murnane

Rich,

Thanks for starting SWSAT and have a good day at the "Children's Expo." Please post some pictures of your NYC Dockside Switchers.

I have been wanting to buy a Lionel 0-6-0T Docksider since seeing some examples on Switcher Saturdays. Small locomotives and short trains are a good fit on my 10’-by-5’ layout, so I checked out several dealers on line but didn’t find any road names that appealed to me. At the recent Amherst Railway Society Railroad Hobby Show in West Springfield, Massachusetts, I searched all day, finally found Reading Locomotive Shops #1251, and bought it immediately. It is a very nicely detailed scale-sized model that runs well. Obviously, a Reading bobber caboose by MTH was also in order. No model locomotive, large or small, could be better to look at or run.

When I buy a model locomotive, I consult references to read about the prototype and check out the accuracy of the model. This Lionel 0-6-0T appears to be the exact locomotive design illustrated on page 32 of “Model Railroader Cyclopedia Volume 1 – Steam Locomotives” by Linn H. Westcott. Listed as built by ALCO in 1910.

saw this on RPN...

Severely damaged in July 2015 by a runaway hopper off the New York, Susquehanna & Western in Utica, NY, ex-NY Central No. 6721, a 0-6-0, was on the move this morning. Its tender will be trucked to Dunkirk, NY for work while the locomotive itself will be worked-on in Utica.

This will be a cosmetic restoration.

The locomotive is owned by the Utica & Mohawk Valley NRHS Chapter. It's been on display at Utica's Union Station approx 20 years.

Here's a short video featuring highlights from this morning's effort:

Have a great Saturday Guys, and stay warm!

Yay! SWSat is rolling on!

Steamer/Dave good news on the NYC 0-6-0.  I have before and after impact pics of that little guy taken from my seat on the Maple Leaf. Shame that so much need to be done on both the engine and tender. The hopper that kid released the brakes on really smashed it.

Supposedly I have a package coming from Germany today. I’ll let you see what is in it next weekend...

This week (with the exception of some work on a small yard at NYSME which I forgot to take pictures of) I have been working on various non switcher projects so I’ll post some pics from the Wayback Machine.  Three pics of switchers from three former layouts . I need to get more progress on my new one done. Oh for more time (as I post from the bleachers of my daughters swim meet).

Have a great weekend. Can’t wait to see what you guys post.

Happy Switcher Saturday everyone.

The package with my latest prewar #228 was opened and I was impressed by the "bulletproof" packaging the seller had used. I posted some of this on another topic, sorry if you are seeing it again.

The seller included 2 pieces of prewar vintage T-Rail track and cut out Styrofoam like a jigsaw puzzle

He used 2 layers of protection.

At first, it didn't run, but a little snipping off of bad wiring and she was off to the races and runs perfectly fine on very little voltage, impressive for a locomotive going on 80 years old.

Good morning fellow switcher friends!!  Happy SWsat!!

Rich - got to love that gang car!  I was always impressed with its back and forth motion as a young kid.  Never got one, however, its never too late ... perhaps the next train show?  I do have a ballast tamper which I picked up several Timonium  GSMTS shows ago for a good price.  Thanks too - for being at the throttle and getting rolling  this morning!

Frenchtrians - Daniel - I love the switching locomotive from around 1850!  Terrific looking little thing!  At that time American railroads were using horses to switch the yards, as I understand it.

Tom - your prewar 0-6-0 looks great!  Enjoy!!

Lee - love that end cab and the string of boxcars!  Nice collection of vehicles as well!

Melgar - great Reading Shops switcher!

Andy - love the Porter!

Mark - nothing speaks to me like a B&O SW 9.  I have the same MTH locomotive and its one of my best runners!

Steamer - nice photos!  Glad that switcher is being repaired!

Mike CT - that Track Mobile is quite a cool little machine!  I saw it at Steamtown when I visited several years ago.  I also rode behind their 0-6-0 on the short excursion thru the yard and across the street to the Scranton Furnace.  My dad was with me at the time, and he thought we'd never arrive at the Furnace, due to the slow going of the train which had no bathroom.    I think he had to pee!

Last Sunday I went to the GSMTS at the Maryland State Fair Grounds in Timonium with my friend Randy.  We had a fabulous time!!

Before going to the show, I really thought I had enough locomotives.  Well low and behold I was wrong!  Very wrong!  There were deals too good to pass up ... and of course I'm never one to pass up a great deal!  Since Pennsylvania RR is one of the RR that make up my railroad ( Free State Junction Railway ) and I have no steam loco ( only electrics and diesels ) to represent this fine railroad, I found a brand new never run K - line  Pennsy A5 0-4-0 for a great deal!! .  Un-switcher related ... I also purchased a MTH Premier P5a modified with proto 2 for a bargain price!!!  Here are some pics of both locomotives.  Have a wonderful weekend everyone!!

"Zippidy do dah, zippity day...

My oh my, time for SWSAT today!..."

No switcher modeling to speak of... wait a minute... there's been a LOT of switcher stuff that was accomplished last month or two. Here's SOME of it...

The above for my growing Kansas City & Gulf diesel theme, circa 1960s.

And now for a ProtoPic!

I return to the always awesome and much beloved FRISCO...

Happy SWSat!

Great stuff as always. I had my laptop that I take back and fourth to work upgraded this week and lost all my programs. I've been busy updating and re-installing this morning. My files are in the cloud so no worries there at least.

I'm with Melgar on these 0-6-0's. They are great little engines. Mine took a swan dive to the floor a while back and it survived with just a slightly bent rod. By some miracle, it happened to land perfectly on its side. The engineer went flying but he was placed firmly back in his seat.

Have a great weekend.

Was the engineer checked for concussion symptoms?  The railroad better have a good lawyer on retainer in case the engineer files a workers compensation suit.  Better get ready to fork out at least a million.

Bob, I am glad the switcher landed on its side and you were able to put it back in service with minimal adjustments!  Blacky the Tank Engine looks great!!

Thanks Mark- I caught it with the sleeve of my shirt reaching over it, and didn't even feel it. Not till I heard the splat on the floor did I realize what happened. New rule went into effect that day....move the trains from the front of the layout when the MOW crew is on site.

BTW- the engineer was given a full concussion protocol and was cleared to go back to work.

Dang! That's a bummer.  Fortunately, the cab is fixable and in fairness, the driver is at the mercy of the process, unless of course, he is the project coordinator so to speak.  I imagine he was pretty upset when it happened.

well I'll say this about that....my Dad drove truck for over 30 years. My Uncle Jim drove truck until his unexpectedly passed a few years ago. He hauled oversized loads. This is one of his "smaller" loads.

Yes the escort vehicle goes ahead to check clearances...BUT......a good driver hauling an oversized load...ESPECIALLY an over height one, doesn't just hum down the highway. When a driver comes to anything overhead....wires, bridges, etc.....you slow down and even stop to make dang sure there is clearance because of repaving, etc. My Uncle was told this by an old timer when he started, and passed it down.
