Switcher Saturday - Mark II, 8/31/19 !!

My last GMC switcher from the fifties was this I restored some time ago, he is still waithing for decals. It is 3 rail.

So when I saw this one, not yet received , on eBay for a very fair price it was impossible to resist.... and this one is two rail.

I think if the paint is nice to keep it in UP colors, will see.

Friday afternoon at the Paint Factory:

Conrail SW8 #8606 is an Atlas O diecast switcher model. On the bottom, it says Atlas O China 1999. The caboose is by K-line – with the smoke switch off.

JHZ, I like the Naught/Nice ore cars.  I don't recall the importer or are they custom?

Ron, from the yellow plastic chains it looks like the Genset is on display, where or for what event?

Coach Joe - The ore cars are Lionel, from two different eras.  

Melgar - Since I grew up in Reading, that Conrail unit reminds me of the local switcher I used to see around town as a kid.

Ron - that’s a BIG switcher alright.  Looks like a public display of some kind.

The first set of Naughty/Nice cars that Lionel made were postwar style short hoppers with coal and present loads. I get a kick out of them every year running them on my layout. Very clever idea! Lionel at its best, IMO.

This week's 1/1 scale entry is from TradePoint Rail,  a switching service at the repurposed former Bethlehem Steel - Sparrows Point, MD site.    I have heard this engine coming & going but always seemed to miss it, until now.  Maybe someone can help with the engine model ?   I think the engineer is a model RR buff as he always has the bell & horn going,  but his horn sounds like a sick cow, really.  I hope to flag him down someday & get a better shot.

It was a special event for NS employees and open to public for a cost at the North Carolina Transportation Museum (NCTM)  in Spencer June 13, 2009.  The Genset was form the NS yard just north.  Sometimes called Spencer Yard other times Linwood Yard.

Well, I can't read the engine number on the cab but it is three digits and the first digit isn't a "1". Also it is unmistakably an EMD end-cab switcher 

TradePointRail is ex-Patapsco and Black River so I went to RR Pictures Archive:

According to the website roster if the first digit is NOT a "1" it has to be either an SW9 or an SW1500 and there are no outboard hand-rails so I deduce it is ex-NYC 894:

Daniel, I also find these Lionel switchers from the early 1950s irrisistable:

They have heft and Magnetraction, are very good pullers,  and look great parked on sidings. These Postwar gems in good operating order are economical at train shows.

I much prefer these early 1950s Lionel switchers to those made in the late 1950s and 1960s. Arnold

Lew, Nice prototype photographs you have taken and posted on your layout backdrop!

Mark, I thought about putting up backdrop scenes but with the low knee-wall there really wouldn't be room on two of the four walls. Then I thought of using some (107 at last count) of Dad's photo enlargements as a kind of wallpaper and I'm happy with the result. For me the actual scenes and prototypes in the background add to the experience of running&operating the models.

In the pic you can see the tracks curving away to the right. Not far out of sight on the left  side the Red Arrow went off the tracks and down an embankment killing 24 passengers and both firemen and the trailing K4s engineer. 140 passengers injured. An old discussion here of the wreck:

The 616 Santa Fe was produced in the 1960s, however. One of the cheapened NW-2s. Nice looking switcher, though!
