The Colorado Midland Railway will be closed until after the Spring of 2014.

At this point we as a club are still not 100% certain of the future of the layout. Plans have been proposed that only change 10% or less of the layout to a total reduction to a 4000 square foot space surrounded by a glass box. The developer of Union Station Hotel has been very cooperative with us given the great value of real estate.

The power will be turned off in the station this Fall and nobody except authorized personal will be allowed into the facility for as long as 24 months but not longer than March of 2014 when Amtrak will return to the facility and the new Denver Union Terminal.  A representative of our club will be allowed in at certain times to inspect progress and if changes are considered durning the construction the contractors will allow us to access and consult with them.  So far we have had a good experience; hopefully this will be the sign of things to come.

Currently we are the oldest O scale model railroad in the US. the current layout was first constructed during the Depression in 1935. Over the decades and generations of membership many changes have taken place. The University of Colorado will be doing a laser 3D scan of the layout to preserve the layout in state of the art 21 Century technology. The first time this has been done to a model railroad to our knowledge. Already progress has been made to document the 80 years of modeling on the railroad.

As an operator I would like to see a new layout design; I also understand the historical elements that make the railroad so unique. The next 80 years will be interesting to say the least; but one thing is for sure the Colorado Midland will be here.

Keep tabs on progress; we will post them on our website.

Now here is a "theme" model RR I would have visited, if I had heard of it to any extent.  (I had heard of it but it wasn't on my radar, like with a tourist flyer at the

visitor centers, when racing around the area, before racing off to explore prototypical RR history in the state) Fantastic that this club and layout  has been around that long, beginning while RR history was still being made, that a lot of people, including me,  now try to recapture in miniature.  Years, decades, ago I visited the Denver

Museum of Natural History...haven't even heard of that lately, either,  but this layout looks like it should be part of Denver's history, in a museum, as a living, operating part.

Any plans to store everything long term or will scenery items be disposed of prior to reopening?

As a side note, I thing the Denver Commerce or other form of local Government can archive the Club and protect it due to being existence for decades.

I have run many times out of Denver and nothing but good food and people in the area. Despite challenges of a Ethnic change in the south at the time, we were able to do our work without worry.

Erik--

Thanx for news.   In Y2k (already 12 years ago now) I visited Denver for the first tine to see my nephew & his family.  In the course of that visit I was given a guided tour of the club pike (no operation) by one of the members,  I regret I don't recall his name.  I was able to take some photos and was very impressed by the layout.

I'd heard about the redevelopment but didn't realize the whole station was going to be out of service.  Does that mean that "Zephyr" passengers will be served by an "Amshack" a mile or so north of the station and that having to wye the train will be eliminated for that time period?

Lee,

The basic scenery will remain, we plan to store all locos, cars, structures, electronics and anything else we can remove safely.

Woody,

Amtrak is using a small shelter just north of the station.  Not sure about wyeing.

March 21, 2014 is the date given to us by the developer.  We'll see what shape it is in then.

All right, listen here. You guys need to come here and run some trains. Now first we may have to lay some tracks. Then some kind of scenery. Then........... well if you get bored........... I've got DC too!

All the best. I'm hoping this goes very smoothly for you guys. Always love the photos. Very inspiring. The East Coast boys will have to fill the gap with more pictures for a while. Maybe I can finally start building.......... Joe
