While many are familiar with the high-hood versions of the Alco C-420 (LIRR, Monon, and N&W), the C-628 (N&W, sold to C&NW), and the C-630 (five on ex-Train Master trucks), there was a fourth Alco Century locomotive built with a high short hood, that being the C-425. Eleven were built for the Norfolk & Western (who else) in the mid 1960's. At least one still exists, 1013 on the New York & Lake Erie. These units were built with Phase 2 carbodies, the main difference from Phase 1 being the placement of the batteries under the walkways near the end of the long hood on the fireman's (except for N&W - engineer's side). So at the cab there were just these little steps up into the cab.
Years ago I kitbashed one, wasn't totally happy with it, and so sold it off. Well, with extra free time I decided to try again. I acquired a phase 2 Alco C425 from Atlas, a high hood shell from a Stewart C628, and the assorted detail parts. I removed the cab and low short hood from the C425, and grafted the high short hood and cab from the C628. I painted it with Scalecoat II Detail Black paint (I love that color), applied Shell Scale Decals (except the number boards - Microscale), and overcoated with Scalecoat II flat finish. Internally I added a ESU LokSound Select DCC decoder.
Now it is ready to join my fleet of HO scale N&W steam and diesels.
