While ALCO (both Schenectady and Richmond) is associated with Southern Railways Ps4 pacific's , Baldwin built the last 5-1405 to 1409. 1405 to 1408 looked very similar to the Alco Richmond products with Elesco feedwater heaters and big 12000 gallon tenders (instead of the ALCO built 14000 gallon tenders).
The last one 1409 was an oddity though, it had an enclosed Coffin feedwater heater.
Here's my start on the odd last Ps4 #1409 on the workbench.
The smokebox was extended a scale 14 inches for the enclosed Coffin feedwater heater. Cold water pump and bracket added in front of the trailing truck (you will need to zoom in to see it). A MTH 14000 gallon tender with 1/2 inch removed to make it a 12000 gallon tender and Lionel Hiawatha 4 wheel Commonwealth trucks instead of 6 wheel Commonwealths.
Locomotive is factory Lionel paint and tender is Scalecoat Sothern green with K4 decals and Testors dullcoat to seal everything.
Piping still has to be applied plus some other details, but this is the start of the odd last Ps4.
And as added information Southern Railway apparently didn't like the Coffin as the smokebox was cut back and a Worthington SA was applied not too many years after the engine was built. Can some of the steam guys can expound on the advantages and disadvantages of the Worthington SA, BL, Elesco Bundle, vertical coil and Coffin feedwater heaters.
