I am been pretty busy with OGR business during the week so the last few weekends I have been relaxing by installing the latest scene on the layout.  Quite some time ago, I built and installed a Korber power station complex on the layout.  Just behind it was an 8 foot tall display cabinet that blocked the view of the complex when one entered the train room.  This always bothered me so over the last couple of weekends and during the evening hours, I have made a few changes!  First, I moved the display case downstairs and it fit nicely in its new place.  Of course I had to move a bookcase which was originally there first, but the bookcase was relocated at the bottom of the stairs to the train room.  AND...in order to do that, I had to take down some shelving that displayed my radio collection in order to fit the bookcase into its spot.  THEN...I had to find new places to display the radios that were on the shelves I took down....WHEW!!!  Anyway, this gave me a spot next to my power station complex to develop a coaling complex.  I then was able to incorporate and install my Lionel rotary coal dump into the coaling area.  As you can see from the pictures, the coaling area is on a lower level in order to add interest to the scene and to avoid a ramp like approach to the coal dumper.  I am obviously not finished and have much to do like completing the installation of the rock face to the right side of the scene and to add some greenery here and there.  Not sure if I am going to keep the oil derrick in there...we shall see.  I have included about 20 pictures.  Hope you enjoy them and as always...thanks so much for taking the time to look and comment.  By the way, if you right click on a picture and then click "open link in new window", you will get a full screen view.

This was an excellent move! I can visualize how well the power station must look from the entrance area.

I didn’t know you had one of the rotary tipples! I always wanted one myself, so I would have tried to buy it from you. (Not saying that I would have been successful . . .)

Great project and coming along fine, Alan – I can hardly wait to see the rotary coal tipple in operation.

Alan - That is a very nice addition to your power plant scene.  I love the busy, congested, gritty look of the overall complex.  I think you did a great job of incorporating the old original Lionel coal ramp in the scene, but I think it does slightly detract from the overall realism.  That's not a bad thing, just an observation from a person always striving for as much realism as I can achieve.  Very nice job!

Thanks so much everyone!!...

Matt...you are welcome to use any of my ideas...but I'll bet you will improve upon them!

Lee...the crane is riding on rubber tires...

Roger...it IS time for you guys to come down some weekend...and by the way, it wouldn't take much to pass "Arkansas standards"...LOL!!

Alex...you would not have been able to purchase the rotary coal unloader from me because I didn't get it until this past York!!  I found it in the Purple Hall...the only one I saw.

Dan...the gray transformers are K-Line.  The green ones I made myself from plumbing supplies, ceramic beads, and wire pins.  The large green one is an electrical component that had to be changed from my outside air unit...!!

Art...I am in agreement with you...  As I said above in my original post, I am not sure about the ramp.  However, when I have Googled images, there are plenty of ramps that are similar especially several decades ago....so I may do a little painting and modifying and keep it in the scene.  I think the oil derrick is going to go...

Thanks!

Alan

Thanks again guys!

Steve...I function on about 5 or 6 hours of sleep so I work on these projects usually in the evenings.

Carl and Art...I like the idea of a video but have not been able to take or post one satisfactorily at this point.  I have a video camera that is supposed to download directly to Youtube with its special software but I need to figure out how to do so...been saying this for about a year or so now!!..LOL!!

Thanks,

Alan

I have much of that equipment...but not the square footage...so it's mostly

in boxes. And I grew up seeing that stuff - my father worked for a power company,

at a generating plant, with coal everywhere.

I'm jealous - a bigger house, maybe? How much could that cost, really?

Looks great; I like the mixture of PW-style and Hi-Railing.

Alan,

Your scene is very well done indeed.  I especially like the way you incorporated everything into a relatively small space. I wish I had that talent but it never quite works out.

I am a big fan of incorporating modern and PW accessories.

Nicely done and I hope you can manage a video as others have mentioned already.

Thanks,

Ed
