I got really excited for the new  MBTA F40PH, and also  the GP 38-2  First Responders  Units.

Haven't  pre-ordered anything in a long time, but looks like I'll be doing it this year!

BTW - Still looking for a re-run of the MBTA Passenger Cars,  I missed out on them when they were released about ~10years ago?   Still kicking myself for not picking them up

I take that back!   Page 130 - 20-61030 /  a 4 Car Set!   + a 2 car addon pack!    -   FINALLY!!

Thoughts?

Steven J. Serenska

My guess is once the tooling is complete, to run and decorate 50 of an item is miniscule. Especially without an elaborate paint scheme.

Maybe a couple of pieces of Premier rolling stock and that's about all I saw that was of real interest. The only must have might be the BNSF caboose, not sure I have seen those offered previously?

I like the Camelback, would kind of like to have one, but they have no road names I really want. Also $1,000 is about $500 more than I want to pay for a single engine. Maybe I will just keep watching the LC+ Camelback for more road names?

After about 5 years of way more than I could afford in every catalog, it looks like MTH is finally giving me a break, which for the last couple of years I have been desperately hoping for. And hopefully things will stay that way after a more thorough look at the new catalog.

Just looked through the new MTH Catalog and couldn't get excited about anything, especially the prices!   Believe me, I'm no "Taffy Pockets" by any stretch of the imagination but as has been stated many times before, these are "toys" and I personally have to draw the line at some point.  Just Sayin'.

That is a real caboose that CSX uses. Paint is faded but it is a real piece. I like it but there are several recent production Railking versions I get if one ever crosses my path.

Thank you .  I do know it is real; I meant "way off" because of the caboose window arrangement/shape.  Looks great and will be nice to have in O.  I missed the RailKing versions so I'll have to check those out...thanks.

Well, my wallet finally caught a break. A few near misses, but nothing that gets me excited. They finally did a Family Lines scheme, but I just don't like it so much on the GP-38. I wish they had put it on a U-boat. I will be getting the Family Lines bay window caboose, but that is about it for this catalog. I am glad to see they now have led lighting in the passenger cars.

Definate Orders:

  1. NS 40 Boxcar (Premier)
  2. Chessie Passenger cars (Premier)

Thinking about:

  1. ATSF 4-8-4 2926 (Premier)
  2. C&O Greenbrier 614 (Premier)
  3. Presidential Greenbrier 614 (Premier)
  4. Auxiliary tenders for Greenbriers (Premier)

Not sure about:

  1. Royal Hudsons numbers 2860 & 2839
  2. PRR G5 (Any dealers interested in doing one as Long Island #39?)

About the Greenbrier, would it be possible to use the a slightly new tooling for the 614's modified tender?  Also, I think 2 of the variations of the 614 (C&O & Chessie Safety Express) are missing white wall drivers & a black smokebox door.  Other than that, they're pretty good.

I'd love to order several of the European steamers as they are very well executed.

What I do not understand is why our American models look so inferior to the European models that MTH makes.  The European steamers are full of fine piping and honest to goodness firebox above the trailing trucks.

However our American models look terrible in comparison especially the lack of anything above the trailing truck.  Typically a whole bunch of air!   Even their premier models are lacking in many respects.

MTH isn't alone and I have the same issues with many of the other manufacturers.  It's just a pity that our American models look so pale when set against the European ones.

I've heard the excuse in the past that compromise is needed for negotiating tight curves, but the premier locomotives aren't going around 0-27 curves!

If someone could explain this to me I'd greatly appreciate it!!!!!!

SD45 - NOT.

I'm sorry but the Erie Lackawanna as road number 1700 is Not acceptable as a Premier line model as the Real locomotive is an SD45-2, not the same.

Pennsylvania SD45 AGAIN?!?!

Once again No SOUTHERN PACIFIC SD45.  OMG, What a waste of Tooling

I agree! I have waited a long time to see SPSF's reaction when they announce a SP SD-45 and guess I will keep waiting!

I am looking at the MRL high cubes and centerflow hoppers myself and think that will be all I preorder except maybe the UP flag baggage car. Hmmm....

have to agree, with the Yellow colored pages, --- Have we not seen this before.  The new colors of ES, and lights ought to bring some new sales.

Lets see, I get a building with lights, colors, accessories, from the M guys, and its here in 3 days,   why do I need a building.

the NS, thoughts are nice, but I have no NS freight or Pass / cars.  NA- Da,  I want to see an LCCA event in Charlotte this spring!!!!!!

Warehouse Sale

Personally I am very disappointed with this catalog. I've been around long enough to remember the days of multiple newly tooled engines per catalog. Not only are there no newly tooled engines, but they aren't upgrading old tooling either. Why bother touting Proto 3/2 technology if they aren't going to continue to embrace it? Perhaps it's time to say it was a neat idea that didn't pan out? MTH tells me that they don't get enough 2R orders to make many 2R models. Not much I can do about that if they aren't offered. I have recently been running Hi-rail steam on 2 rail hi-rail track with success. I was looking forward to the G5 in this catalog. Unfortunately they didn't bring back the 2R version and the Hi-rail version doesn't support Proto 3/2. I have to admit that my tastes and demands have changed over the years and I am no longer a typical MTH customer. Between their lack of new O products, and their handling of S scale I think I'm just about done with MTH. It may be time for me to finally give in and go to HO or N for good. I don't see the future of O or S getting any better for what I want to do.

"I have to ask, is the B&O Camel Back correct?  If so I am in for one."

Answer: Internet, Internet, Internet. You are there right now.

Per the catalogue - no orders. Lots of nice things, but I have so much, the RS road names are, again, too Other Regional, the locos are not my preferred OS, I already have a PS-1 ATSF 2900 4-8-4 and PS-1 C&O Greenbrier, both awaiting ERR upgrades...and so on and so on.

The Green-brier? Unh.

Well, the CP Hudsons caught my eye.

But with our currency devalued, high taxes, shipping . . . the cost is too high! About $1900 CDN to get it here.

And I already have a beautiful CP Hudson! (Weaver 2816).

And I already have too many engines anyway!

But my initial reaction on seeing them was, "Ohhh. maybe one of them!"

Maybe I'll weaken . . .

I've been waiting for a non-streamlined, non-Royal Canadian Pacific or Canadian National steam engine, 4-8-4 size, so still no-go. Being a first edition baby boomer there's no time to lose now.

I'm going to have to break one of my own rules about not buying anything motorized from MTH. However, the item in question wouldn't be for the layout, and is a must have because it literally "hits me where I live". I'm talking about the Twin Cities Lines PCC car. Probably get a couple and do a small ceiling layout with them.

Beyond that, a few premier cars, mostly high cubes and gons, and I'm done with this catalog.

Does anyone notice how goofy looking the pilot area looks on the C&O 4-8-4? Compare a real picture to this model, something is really wacky there. I think it is the same way on the ATSF 4-8-4.

There were two different types of pilots. The J3's 600-606 had one type and the J3a's 610-610 had a different style.

So is the new one correct for the 602 and the 614?

What I'd like:

Railking Veterans unit SD70ACe and bay window caboose set. It's not realistic, but at this stage, if I ever find any money, I don't have the space for the actual model.

Port Authority of Allegheny County T PCC car. AWESOME. Thanks MTH.

US Steel hot metal cars. Why not?

The AC44CWM (I think that's the NS designation) would be nice, but again, no money and no curve radius.

For a number of reasons, I'm into HO scale, now; and I think very highly of their(MTH'S) HO locomotive offerings...

Some GREAT locomotives being offered, from the Premier line: two GE's(AC4400CW's & Dash-9's), Canadian Pacific GP38, VIA F40-PH, SD45, and the Canadian Pacific Hudson's... to name a few; and, they come in scale wheels versions, too.

These are exactly the type of locomotives that I like; regardless of the scale...

My compliments, MTH.

Rick

No they had a different style since the #602 was a J3 and the #614 was a J3a. I think Sunset did some J3's in the past. It would be interesting to see their pilots.

Well, MTH did offer 6069 4-8-2 "Bullet-Nose Betty" just a year or so ago. It's pretty nice. Weaver's CP2816 was a gorgeous, unstreamlined Hudson but that was back nine years ago and I had to gut mine and replace the TAS boards with ERR. Love it though! It was worth the hassle! (I think!)

If you missed it, you missed it. That's the trouble in this hobby. We so often see posts like "it's the same ole, same ole." But for those who missed the year it was offered, that's a slap in the face! I may still weaken and get one of the Hudsons . . . maybe. Our "Northern Peso" sure isn't making me feel good about buying though!

I looked at the two PS2 MTH Greenbrier's I have #610 has black walls and #613 has whitewalls. Go figure but they do have graphite smokebox doors.
