Thought I would share with everyone the progress of my first layout. But let me give you a little background first.

Growing up I've had a love for trains. Luckily so did my father. He collected G-scale both LGB and USA trains. We had a floor layout in our house that went around our Den for 6-7 years. I would spend countless hours on the floor watching the trains pass by. My favorite time of year was when the Great American Train Show would be held at the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California. Every year we would go and I would drool over the detailed layouts the clubs would setup. After ever show I would tell my dad how we should make a permanent layout with mountains, trees, grass and buildings. Unfortunately it was a dream that never happened.

Now, let’s fast forwards 20 years. I'm now 33 years old living in a small 2 bedroom apartment. One day I thought to myself its time to make my dream come true.

Three years ago, I saw a flyer that the Great American Train show was coming to our area. I called up my dad and told him I have a surprise for him this weekend so keep Saturday clear. As I look back on that day I have to say it was an emotional roller coaster. Not seeing much of any G scale trains, my father asked various vendors if G scale was still popular. Their reply was G scale took a hard hit in the late 90s. Sadden by the news but still excited to see all the different layouts, we had a great time. I for one was really impressed with what Lionel had to offer.

Sooo, I purchased my first O-scale train. The Lionel Berkshire 765 which was setup on the floor in my guess room. I instantly fell in love with all the features and sounds. I wanted more!!! My collection quickly expanded. But still something was missing. I wanted to make a table top layout!!

Stumbling on this forum and reading through the different post, getting some what of an idea on what to do. I decided to give it a shot.

After building a workbench, was mapping out the layout.

Finished all the bench work. Adding foam board, figuring out my rail yard is to small.

Was planning on having a much larger mountain but foam board is very expensive in Southern California

looks like it's taking shape nicely. I'm also planning to start a "permanent" layout using FasTrack - let us know if the foamboard helps minimize the sound. BTW what thickness are you using and where do you get it? thanks.

The only place that sold a 4' x 8' sheet was Foam Mart in Culver City. The 1/2" sheet was $52.00.... ouch. I use to be able to buy a 1" sheet at home depot for $24.00 but they no longer stock it in my area. Honestly, for the price I don't think the foam help in minimizing the sound at all, its still pretty loud. If I didn't already have a lot of fastrack from my previous layout I would use a different track. The carpet did a much better job damping the sound. At some point I am going to apply a wash to the ballast on the fastrack. See if I can make it look a little more realistic.

Hi Jason,

Looks good! growing up with a train guy made something stick.

The yard looks ok. Extend it into the closet.

I can work on it a little, if you tell me what you want to do with it.

Looks like you can store some cars and have some engine service. I think adding the length will allow space for a switching engine.

Carl,

I now have the rail yard turning into the closet so it runs the whole length. I will post a few photos of it later. Luckily I don't own to many clothes.
