I know little about this set. If anyone could provide me an idea of value (or where to find a value) I'd appreciate it!

Its a post war ( 60's on) Heinreich Wimmer ( HWN - Western Germany, Nuremburg ) set , probably retailed in the USA by a chain store in the late 60's early 70's ??? . not a specifically rare or quality piece , but yours looks in nice condition however it is missing the little steam roller that would have been on the flat car as a load ( these always go missing lol ) ... I have the slightly earlier non-sparking version of that set myself ( with the Steam roller even!
Sadly if you think you are on a cash cow , you will be slightly disappointed , I would expect a set like that to go for around $40-75 USD? People ask for more on places like ebay etc but they dont sell for extravagant prices .. Asking and getting can be very different animals
They were made pretty cheaply , and in reasonably large numbers to fill the cheap and cheerful boom times in the toy market that took place in the late 50's to early 70's ... HWN was a fairly decent firm , but after the war they concentrated on volume as opposed to quality ... Don't get me wrong they are still nice things ! But by the end HWN was satisfying low end demand for a good few years before it kicked the bucket
You can see your exact set and box here https://www.binnsroad.co.uk/railways/hwn/index.html
With toys like that I value them more in the smiles they brought to kids than the actual cash they fetch today .

Wow - great info! Thank-you very much for the link too! The little steam roller is very nice - to bad I'm missing it. I don't have sentimental value for this set so maybe I'll put up for sale and give it a shot ............... 😉
OK just did my google-fu and there is currently a complete boxed set on ebay asking for $95 ... so I wasnt far off !
( search string " Sparking choo choo " in Toys and Hobbies )
Being in the box brings a premium tho , even tho its a poor condition box ... so deduct $30+ for that alone
Mettoy , Made in the UK , again 1960's ... again a low value high volume coach as to value , minimal under $10 ... the SET in box would probably go $100-ish in the US and less than that in the UK ... seen them go for like 55-80 £ ??
Comes from a nice set tho which does have some value ( mainly due to the loco unfortunately for you )
With Mettoy it could well have been sold along with other sets ... they weren't prolific in model range and tended to mix and match a bit )
I again have one , but unboxed and made from pieces acquired over the years
eg...
Welcome to Antiques Roadshow... budget trains edition ... now heeeeeeere's FATTY!!!
Superb! Thank-you so much! I'll merely include it in the HWN set when it sells............... RVB
No problems Richard ! Glad to help ... I see by your profile you are in Canada , which pretty much makes you an honourary Australian ! ... If you ever come across some Canadian livery or made in USA Hornby tinplate .. drop me a line , I would be interested for sure
Lovely display. Thank-you for sharing!
