I've always liked the look of tinted windows on contemporary prototype diesels and  I believe, if I'm not mistaken, that Overland Models is the only manufacturer to add the tint to appropriate models. I  wanted to see how Lionel's ACe would look with tinted windows and with 2 rail wheelsets added.  I used Tamiya PS-31 smoke spray tint on a piece of clear styrene that is temporarily taped to the cab windows. To get the desired color, I used three coats of spray. The wheelsets are non-geared 42", .145" thread width and look pretty good since they're closer in scale to the 43" wheel that the prototype uses. I'm also going to try adhesive window film to see how that looks when I convert a few Lionel ES44 loco's to 2 rail.

Overall, I'm pleased with what I see, although I still have more work to do to it. In the last pic, posed next to an Overland 70mac that I used as a reference to get the desired color or shade of tint.

Ron H: I'm very pleased with the way it looks too! Thanks.

Swafford: I will keep everyone posted. Right now my plans are to have at least convert one ES44 this summer. I'm thinking of doing a BNSF H3 for starters and overall have four, two BNSF H3's, and two UP units. I agree that it would be nice if Lionel offered the loco's you mentioned in 2 rail or made 2 rail wheelsets like they do for their S scale diesels.

CoasterP: In my opinion, the Lionel ACe looks better than the MTH. Although the Lionel unit isn't made in 2 rail with fixed pilots, I still like the Lionel more. I like Lionel's truck sideframes and pilots over MTH.

Maxsouthoz: I noticed the dark tint on a UP SD70ACe while I was sitting at a crossing several weeks ago. I believe some of the earlier SD70's from the 90's had tint on them, but not as dark as what is seen on some of the more contemporary loco's.  Thanks.

Couldn't agree with you more on the looks of the Lionel SD70ACe and Es44AC's over their MTH equivalents.   Definitely keep everyone posted on the conversions.
