I have a early version tiu and a upgraded hand held they don't talk to each other any ideas?

did you put the latest software 6.1 in the remote n tiu . also count the blinks inside tiu normally a single tiu is set to one blink n remote set to 1 or they won't communicate !Alan
Try tethering the remote to the TIU, see if they get in contact that way. Exactly how old is the TIU, and what version of software does it have? I've connected my 6.1 software remote to TIU's with 3.xx versions of software.

I found out a phone cord don't work I don't know where to get the correct one
You need a 4-wire curly handset cord for the remote to TIU setup. Also, make SURE you don't plug the remote into the AIU socket by mistake, that's really hard on the TIU and remote.
