Hi.

I’m preparing my Lionel trains for their annual “carpet layout” Christmas tree display, which is a basic one-line oval.

Since this year I’m running Legacy trains with a refreshed PW ZW transformer, I’m using a TMCC Direct Lockon to handle any inadvertent shorts.  (I have a TVS diode installed b/w the A and U posts of the ZW.)

The TMCC D/L allows you to set the amp switch at either 135w or 180w.  I think that the D/L manual recommends 135w when using a PW transformer.

Could someone here confirm that 135w is the appropriate setting for my setup.

TY, and Happy Thanksgiving!

The ZW is rated for 250-275 watts. Even derated its still easily capable of 180 watts. The reference to 135 watts is probably for most all the other PW transformers. For short periods its actually more capable than any modern transformer because they are limited to ten amps max by UL. The ZW will output more than that.

The Direct Lockon was designed with the 135 Watt and the 180 Watt Powerhouse brick like transformers in mind. They are designed to plug right in. Then you select the power limit according to which one you are using. The Lockon is an excellent choice for a postwar ZW to achieve an electronic, fast breaker for your layout. I would select the lowest setting necessary for your Christmas layout. I would guess that the 135 Watt setting would suffice. As pete points out though, if you need more, then the 180 Watt setting is not too high for a ZW.
