I know this has probably been answered a million times, but hey, once more can't hurt.

I have 3 TMCC engines: Lionel GP9 SAL engine #1912, MTH Railking RS3 #1634, and 3rd Rail E7 #3029.

In the DCS handheld I used the following when I assigned addresses:

#1912 - 12

#1634 - 34

#3029 - 29

The engine NAMES/NUMBERS stayed the same (1912, 1634, 3029), in other words, when I select an engine from the engine list 1912, 1634, and 3029 show in the list.

So things are running fine.  Then last week I had the epiphany that I could use the CAB1-L to run my TMCC engines while at the same time use the DCS handheld to run my PS2 engines, so cool

I had to re-enter (switching the PRG/RUN switch) all 3 engines into the CAB1-L and used addresses 12, 34, and 29 (just like in the DCS handheld).  So all week I've been running my TMCC engines using the CAB1-L, last night I decided to switch back to using the DCS handheld.

When I chose my first TMCC engine (1912) from the list, nothing happened.  I had to go into the MENU and re-assign the address to 12 (using PRG/RUN switch).  Engine ran fine afterwards.

Then I picked up the CAB1-L and pressed TR and 12 to see if I could simply swap between handhelds and...nothing happened

What happens to the addresses in the handhelds when going from one to the other?  If I've assigned 12 to the engine in both handhelds, it would seem all I'd have to do is grab one or the other handheld and run the engine.

It's early (I've been up since 0200) so things may be a bit fuzzy this morning

Barry, did as you instructed...same thing.  I still have to shut down the layout if I want to switch from DCS handheld to CAB1-L.

E7 3029 is assigned address 29 in the DCS handheld

It's listed as engine 6 in the list of active engines

The DCS handheld screen shows - 6 SAL E7 3029

It's assigned address 29 in the CAB1-L

After shutting down TMCC engine (E7 3029) using the DCS handheld (press AUX1 and button 5), I pick up the CAB1-L and press ENG and number (29), nothing happens.  If I shut down the layout and turn it back on, the engine works fine.

Here's something I noticed:  If I LEAVE the layout on, the engine sounds don't start, but when I turn the knob the engine moves (no sounds at all).

It may be a quirk with the CAB1-L   All 3 TMCC engines are doing the same thing.

At initial turn-on of the layout I can use the CAB1-L to control the TMCC engines and the DCS handheld to control the PS2 engines so all is not lost.

ONLY when I try to go back to the CAB1-L (after using the DCS handheld) is when the problem arises.

Question, all 3 of these engines have the PRG/RUN switch underneath the sideframe of the engine, can't get to it with engine on the track.  I turn off the layout, pick up the engine and move the switch from RUN to PRG, place the engine back on the track then turn the layout back on.  Same thing when moving the switch back from PRG to RUN, have to turn off layout and lift engine.  Is that the preferred method? I can't imagine why we should move the switch with power on.

Thanks for your help anyway Barry

As long as I keep the TMCC engines running using the CAB1-L or the DCS remote, things are fine.  It's when I switch between the two that causes problems.

The only reason I tried it is because I like the thumbwheel action on the DCS handheld a bit better than the CAB1-L knob.  I can't get used to unexpected, sudden stop of the engine, the DCS readout gives me a "clue" as to when I'm approaching 0smph.  I'm sure with use I could get accustomed to the CAB1-L (it's the same thing when using the DCS Remote Commander, no readout).

I'd be interested if anyone else has seen this though.

Hi Bob,

What you are seeing is normal TMCC/Legacy engine behavior.  When an engine sees it's first command (any command) after track power is turned on the sounds start up.  If the engine sounds are subsequently "shut down" from either the DCS remote or Cab-1L and track power is not interrupted you need to use the "start up" command (button 3 on DCS remote, AUX1 - 3 on the Cab-1L) to turn the sounds back on.
