I have entered the information for my Lionel TMCC Shay into the Legacy handheld unit with the engine ID #13, as displayed initially on the unit. When the keypad display comes up on the handheld and the on/off switch is pressed, the engine does not respond. Then the display changes to another display. ????

What am I doing wrong?

It was my understanding that a TMCC loco could be operated with a Legacy control unit?

Is it necessary to insert the generic TMCC module??

You can use the generic TMCC steam module or scroll through the menu and set it up yourself. Must TMCC will be TMCC setting, steam, and RS unless you have one of the new that has Railsounds 5.0 which was just before Legacy. I hope this helps.

Had you used the Shay on TMCC before you got Legacy?

If not the chances are it is still ID #1

Try changing the ID to #1 in the Legacy remote.

If the engine responds that was the problem. I would then change the engine ID to something that contains the engines road number. i.e. Engine 4008 would be ID #8

You will then need to change the engine ID number in the Legacy remote to that same number.

You can swap between ID numbers by pushing the button marked "ENG" and the using the keypad touch screen to enter the number.

Hope this helps

Most Lionel TMCC locos will operate smoothest in TMCC mode. You can change the mode by addressing ENG 13, then press the info button.

You can scroll through the selections by throttle knob and change the control type by selecting it. Once you have your loco set up hitting info will bring back the regular screen.

TMCC, cab1, and Rel 100 modes are all different types of speed step settings, as I stated earlier TMCC mode usually works best for Lionel TMCC locos.

Darn Rick, I was thinking Cab 1 mode was the better choice but my memory has been off lately. Which mode gives Absolute Speed Steps? I remember running my TMCC PRR PA A-B-A set with Legacy Cab-2. They would not run very well with TMCC Cab-1. They would buck each other. With the Cab-2 and Absolute Speed Steps they ran great.

These are Lionel engines. They were the very first along with the UP Veranda to have Odyssey speed control. They developed that after their failed attempt with the Odyssey Motor. There is no switch to turn off the Odyssey Speed control. Before Legacy the fix would have been to change out Odyssey motor driver with the newer version with provision for the on off switch. I just read over the Legacy manual and page 81 cleared my confused mind. TMCC Mode has 32 absolute speed steps not Cab1 mode as I stated I thought it was. All this has me wanting to get the engines out for an operating session at our open house at the club next weekend.
