Just getting around to hooking up TMCC (already have DCS), so I'm learning lots of new stuff.  Looking for some more education...

Recently saw a TMCC base for sale at a good price, but it was missing the power supply.  My first thought was that it wouldn't be a big deal - most of us have lots of extra wall warts laying around or we can buy one for a few bucks.  However, I checked one of my TMCC sets, and noticed that the power supply output was 12v AC, which is rather unusual since most wall warts put out low voltage DC.  So, a garden-variety wall wart won't work.  Did some searching, and it looks like 120v AC to 12v AC transformers cost $40 and up, and that's without a suitable plug.

So, my questions are:

1) If the TMCC power supply fails or gets lost, what is the best option?

2) Could one find a suitable plug and wire directly to a spare transformer that is set to 12v?

3) I noticed that a later Legacy/Cab1 set's power supply puts out 9v AC.  Can the bases work with either 9v or 12v AC, or does it cause problems?

Thanks.

12 VAC output at 250ma, $6.10 shipped on eBay: 384450738313, US seller.

To replace the tmcc command base transformer, this brick will need an earth ground lead.  In order connect the earth ground lead, you need to run a wire from the outside barrel of the power jack or pin 5 of the serial data connector.  Either of those places will work, they are electrically connected internally.

For my TMCC buffer, I made a power tether that tapped off the outside of the power jack barrel and provided a lead from the tether.  The earth ground lead has to go to the 3rd prong of a properly grounded outlet, or something like the water pipe ground.  You can also use a 9-pin serial connector and run pin-5 to the same earth ground.

There has been a lot of discussion over the years on this, but having a AC supply is just a small part of the equation... the original wall-wart has a grounding post that is crucial to the promulgation of the TMCC signal. If the original is not available, there are a few work-arounds... check HERE.

Unfortunately, I didn't find that thread before I submitted my original post.  I've asked the moderators to move the replies to this thread into the one you linked to.  I hope that it can be done.

Sorry to create the confusion.
