TMCC Problem

When you push buttons or move the throttle on the CAB-1 does the red light on the base flash?

No. it stays green.

Try new batteries?  Do the keys beep?

I had tried new batteries and there was a beep.

I retried inserting the batteries to hear the beep... and didn't hear one this time.

So I moved them around a little and noticed beeps as it connected and diconnected.

I push the batteries in more carefully. The system now works. Thanks.

I might have a contact problem with the batteries and their Cab-1 contacts. Is this a problem with other Cab-1's?

The battery contacts tend to get flattened over time and do not make "contact" with the batteries. This is a common cab1 problem, take a small flatblade screwdriver and gently pry the contacts back out a bit, problem solved.

My first troubleshooting exercise on anything with batteries is to check the batteries and then clean/scrub the ends of the batteries and the contacts in the device.

Another problem with the CAB1 units is batteries get left in and the terminals get corroded when they leak.  When that happens, even when you clean them, they tend not to make as good a contact as before the plating corroded off.

I've had pretty good luck cleaning battery contacts with the eraser end of a common pencil. Low tech but works...

The problem with the battery terminals is you remove the plating cleaning the corrosion off the terminals, they'll never truly be the same after that.  I agree that cleaning them is necessary in any case, but the cleaning won't last as long after the plating is gone.

Another issue is with rechargeable batteries. They tend to be slightly smaller in length than regular AA's.
