I have a VGN 508 berkshire locomotive. The smoke unit leaves a lot to be desired. So I was wondering is it possible to replace it with a mth smoke unit and what repairman to send it to?Any leads I will be greatly thankful.BTW I got a tip to pass on to the forum.About lionel tmcc locomotives. If you have any sidings on your layout.Be sure to have any boxcars on the tracks.I did some track work. And had a boxcar just laying on the tracks. My tmcc locomotive acted as if their was a short. Then I smelled smoke.Burning smoke then I heard a sizzling. It was not coming from the locomotive. But from the boxcar that was on the siding. It was a williams boxcar with its trucks and wheel smoking.I picked up off the tracks. Now the locomotive runs good now.I do not understand since that siding does not have any power to it.At least so I thought. But I looking to tear it down anyway. And get new or lightly used gargeaves track.I am getting away from atlas o track.

This is the 6-38077 model, right? It has one of Lionel’s innumerable “semi-smart” smoke units that are meant to work with a TMCC board. I don’t think you can just drop in or swap over to an MTH unit and keep things like the chuffing function and boost - but let’s see if someone else chimes in with a suggestion. I thought about much the same swap a while back but didn’t find a way to do it.

I’ve worked on a number of smoke units of this kind and they’ve been commented on here in other threads. This one has an 8 Ohm resistor and should produce good smoke if the wadding is new, properly packed in the reservoir and soaked with smoke fluid, there’s proper voltage to the track and you’ve used the TMCC control to set smoke output to high. I suggest it’s better to see whether your existing smoke unit is properly serviced before contemplating a change in it.

Your siding short incident is weird!
