Is it true that MTH's older ProtoSound 2.0 files, such as ones from 2000 and 2001, become obselete and can no longer be downloaded into engines for sound changes or PS2 upgrades? I ask this because I recently attempted to upgrade an MTH Blue Comet from 1998 to ProtoSound 2.0, and I honestly prefer the high pitched chuffing from the earlier PS2 locos, like here:

I also prefer the whistle on the 2001 RailKing Blue Comet as this operator did to his upgraded BC.

But when I tried to, it said the file was incompatible, saying it was only compatible for HO engines, so I had to find another file. I'm not as fond of the newer, deeper chuffing, and I REALLY dislike the whistle on the later released MTH Blue Comet's, like here:

I was curious if the PS2 sound files used on MTH's Lionel Corporation Tinplate/Tinplate Traditions are compatible with regular MTH PS2 engines? If so, I could get use one of the files from one the tinplate BC's and I'd be much happier.

Hi Thomas,

As Russell said, the division is between sound files designed for 5 volt PS2 circuit boards and 3 volt.  In general, anything made in 2000 or 2001 is 5 volt.  Anything made in 2003 and later is 3 volt.  In 2002 there was a change over period where some were delivered with 5 volt and others with 3 volt.  Many, but not all, 5 volt sound files were converted to 3 volt and are available as "PS2 Upgrade" files.  If you like the Railking sound file from 2001, you can get the "upgrade" 3 volt version here:  30-1172-1 product document search
