I have been a long time HO scale model railroader. I now want to build a 2 rail O scale layout using sectional track, most likely Atlas. I have been told that track availability is poor and the track can be hard to find. They feel I should go with 3 rail. I really prefer the scale look of 2 rail. Is it true that the track will be tough to get and will it be much more expensive. What is a good source for the track?

Of course you must know by now that two rail stuff gets power from each rail and is usually D.C. powered.

Try to find Gargraves Track on the web, www.gargraves.com should be correct, as gargraves might make two rail track. If not use Gargraves three rail track with darkened center rail called Phantom Rail, looks nice and has no electrical issues with it like Atlas two rail.

Another company to try is Ross Custom Switches, see if they make two rail track.

Art,

Everything, including track, has supply problems.  As for track, once you put it down, no one is going to rip it up so that you must buy more.  The point is that it is a one time problem and not a problem of continuing aggravation.  Check around to see if, in fact, there is a supply problem with Atlas 2 rail track.  There may not be.

Lee,

What are the electrical issues with Atlas 2 rail track to which you are referring?

Ed

You might try Micro-Mark for Micro-Engineering's 2-rail O gauge track.  Well made stuff.

I haven't shopped for 2-rail O gauge track in recent years so don't know what the situation might be with Atlas in terms of supply or which dealers might have it.

If 2-rail is what you want, by all means don't go with something else just because someone tells you that 2-rail track isn't readily available.

I just looked at the Atlas 0 website, and it shows most but not all of the sectional track items in stock;  that is, not all curve radii are in stock.  The 3' flex sections are out of stock.   In turnouts the #5's and the wye are in stock, but the 7.5's aren't.  I don't know how up to date that listing is though.

I would definately not use Gargraves track for 2 rail, speaking from experience.

Best, SZ

Edited to add:

MTH, since they decided that pain and suffering should not be a necessary part of 2 rail 0 scale, also makes [ or perhaps "sells" is a better word ]  sectional 2 rail track, although only one straight section and two curve radii are available.  It seems to be available in the US, though at a very limited number of stores.

Disclaimer:  I have never seen it, nor have I seen any reviews of it.  Is it made by ETS ?

Dear Sir,

jsu tbecause Atlas states it doesn't have certain items doesn't mean distributors and hobbys hops like P&D, Norm's O-SCale and others don't have the product in stock. In the latest issue of

O-Scale trains has ads from hobby shops that sell these items. As Allan Miller stated, don't let some one tell you that some product isn't there and then not go forth because of that. There are many dealers that can get to you what you want in 2-rail. It might take some digging. but that might be part of the fun and being introduced to some one that might be of great help now and later on.

Sounds like the impatient part of you wants to go 3 rail, and your interest is 2 rail.  Don't "settle"...build what you really like/want and will end up enjoying in the long run.  If you need to wait for a bit in order to get some 2 rail track...then be patient and wait, you'll be happy you did.  In the mean time I'm sure if you do some checking around you will be able to locate what you need.
