Question 1) I have never attempted to replace a traction tire on a steam locomotive. Obviously, the siderods will have to be moved out of the way. My steamers only have traction tires on the back two wheels. Can I simply take the cap bolt out holding the rod to the wheel and slip the tire in under it? Disassembling those siderods is going to be a major undertaking. I have both MTH and Lionel steamers needing tires.

Question 2) I have a brand new Southern Alco S-1 diesel switcher that derails itself from a standing start. It tries to move, but lead truck climbs over the rail and shorts out. Is it possible that excessively thick tires are causing this? The tires are thicker than the wheel. They stick out beyond the wheel tread but not the flange. This is a high end Legacy engine too. Any thoughts?

Good advice from Joe and Hokie on changing tires.

You are going to have to examine your ALCO to see why it leaves the rails.  First, make sure the truck moves freely.  When you lift it up you should be able to rock the truck from side to side and back to front.  If it is tight you will need to open the shell to see if some of the wires are binding.  Next, examine the tire to be sure it is seated correctly.  The tire should be just above the wheel surface.  Look for any difference between the truck that derails and the other truck including the space between the wheels (gauge) which should be uniform.  Finally, with the locomotive on a piece of track, make sure that all four wheels make good contact with the rails.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.
