While replacing tires on my MTH GN engine I encountered a strange happening. While taking off the screw to loosen the driving rod, it was hard to turn out the screw. When it did wind out, the screw was not threaded. What had apparently had happened is the sleeve came out with the screw still attached. Has anyone else had this problem, and what did you do to extract just the screw the next time? For now, I was able to tap down the sleeve and all seems tight, but this is not going to do forever. Look forward to replies. Thanks,

Jeff

Also: Should I try and grip the sleeve and try and remove the screw first so that the screw will extract more easily the next time?

You can but be careful not to crush/distort the sleeve.

Probably best to pull it out screw and all if possible and Loctite the sleeve in place, then back the screw out of the sleeve.

271 is a thread locker and may not perform as well as a retaining compound or an epoxy for the sleeve.

I've not had an issue using Loctite in this application. The screw doesn't take much torque so the thread locker works fine. If one has some epoxy around (i.e. JB Weld) I don't see why that wouldn't work as well.

NO!  Remove that screw first.  You can grip the sleeve with plier with teeth to firmly hold it without distorting.  Get screw out which also uses locktite.  The teeth marks will act as a knurl to help secure sleeve.  You can compare to the opposite wheel and seat the sleeve to the same depth with a adhesive of your choice.  Reattach linkage and screw after it sets.  Do clean as mentioned before reinstall.  G
