Here is a video from ABC news about a train hitting a tractor trailer yesterday in New York City. No one was seriously hurt.

The video appears to show that the gates did not come down nor did the lights start to flash until after the train hit the truck. Do gates malfunction often?

Yeah, unfortunately, looks like the RR will have to eat this one. The news said the speed limit was 15 MPH and it looks to me like they (the train) were going faster than that. No lights and no gate either. You can see the gate starting to come down after the truck is hit. Ohhhhh boy!!!

This is kind of an aside but...what kind of road name was that 2nd diesel??
To analyze this one, we need more facts. Was this on a main track or on an industrial spur? If the speed limit actually was 15 MPH, was there a special instruction to require that trains or engines approach the crossing prepared to stop until active warning devices are fully operational? It does seem like the crew moved across the crossing expecting the gates to be down.
That's not a dash cam, more like "visor" cam. All the stuff worth seeing is missing

The truck driver is lucky that someone else was recording the scene at the time. No one would ever have believed him if he said that the gates didn't go down before the train's arrival. The video clearly shows otherwise.
He's also lucky, obviously, to have escaped serious injury.

This was on the New York and Atlantic, formed in 1997 to privatize the freight operations on the LIRR which was state owned for many years. They inherited much of the LIRR's fleet of MP-15 and GP-38 diesels. Repainted in varying states of mainly green with white stripes.
