A character who will be remembered, even by those with no interest in sports, and

who added a word, "yogi-ism", to the dictionary.

Being the old fart that I am, I watched Yogi play in Yankee stadium in the mid-'50s. We loved him because, more than being a great catcher, he could be counted on to hit a home run now and then. There was always hope when Yogi came to bat.

We used t watch the Yankees (on TV from New Orleans) and my Dad was a big fan. He told me that Yogi was one of the best 'clutch-hitters' he's ever seen. I always liked him...

I'm a Mets fan and Yogi was the Mets manager from back in the 1970's when he took them to the World Series (1973 I think).

Some of the funnier lines I heard today was when Yogi was at the White House for some award with then President George W. Bush, who once was involved in baseball with the Texas Rangers. President Bush, sometimes known to massacre a few phrases, was pretty funny saying that Yogi was actually "an inspiration for him!" Then he went on to say that, "Some members of the White House Press Corps think that Yogi is my speech writer!"

One of the local sports talk show hosts today had this to report. Some time ago Yogi's wife asked him if he would rather be buried in New York or New Jersey. Allegedly, he answered her "I don't know. Surprise me."

Great baseball player and human being- RIP Yogi.

I have been trying to find the story when he said that. It had to do with him learning the subways and taking the train to the stadium to get to a big game.

"I knew I was going to get lost, so I left an hour early." New York Yankees were scheduled to play the Brooklyn Dodgers in a pre-season exhibition game at Brooklyn's Ebbets Field. Berra arrived first.

And at the age of 18 on June 6th 1944 300 yards off Omaha beach lobbing shells for the Navy..

I watched him on TV as a guest on a show that was honoring pitcher Whitey Ford.  The host asked Yogi to tell a story about Whitey's pitching.  Yogi said that in one game the first batter hit the first pitch for a single.  The next batter hit the first pitch for a single.  The third batter hit the first pitch for a double.  Casey Stengal called timeout and went to the mound with Yogi to talk to Whitey Ford.  Casey asked Yogi how did Whitey's pitches look?  Yogi told Casey I don't know, I haven't caught any yet.

As a boy, learning Yogi wasn't always about a cartoon bear,

didn't mean I wouldn't learn that he was a character to be watched.
