I have a crossing gate installed using track voltage to operate it, I have insulating pins in the outside rail.

As the train enters the insulated section of rail it stops, the crossing gate operates there is power to the engine and it restarts with the direction button. I am using Gargraves track. Need to know why the engine is stopping and how to correct the situation.

DM did you change your insulated pin to the inside rail . I'm telling you this because  thats why the power is getting interrupted on your engine and going in reverse. Your train got to run on outside rail and center rail. So if you have the insulated pin on outside rail then that track does not have power til train enters it thats why your train is stopping.  

Gargraves track (conventional) has the two outside rails insulated from each other. You need to run a jumper wire between the two outside rails, near to, but not at, the point where you have the insulated control rail.  Your train is coasting through the insulated section, and getting itself into neutral.

 

If you have an ohmmeter, turn off all power, remove the train from the area of the control section, and check for continuity between the two outside rails on either side of the control section.

Train Larry- the engine is a 2343, I will lock out the E unit and se what happens.

Chessie 1971- I have the insulating pins in the outside rail because thats what the Lionel book shows, also I have a gateman and crossing gate at another loction and it works fine.

Arthur- I have the jumper wire just outside the insulated section, I will check with the ohm meter and report back.

I stumped because as I said the engine works fine at two other locations with the same set up.
