Having used aluminum extrusions from the 8020 Company extensively in my business, I decided to use them in building my O gauge tinplate railroad.  At first I was concerned that the presence of all that aluminum would interfere with my Lionel Legacy control system.  However that turned out to be a non-problem.  While non cheap, this has proven to be a very satisfactory construction method.  I have added onto it numerous times, simply bolting additional sections to the framework as needed, and completing it with track and scenery.

I had a company discount of about 25%, but retail for everything I bought at the time I bought it would have been around $2K.  There are other companies besides 8020 making similar products, possibly at less cost.  $2,000 is a hefty sum, but when you think about it there are many Lionel engines that cost more.  Here are a few more pictures:
