I’m just getting back into model railroading

Planning a layout under Christmas Tree - approximately 5’ by 4’

will have 2 level - O gauge on main level

O27 train (received in 1956 when I was 6!)

I was planning part of lower level to be in tunnel

if I construct the tunnel with woodland scenic 1/4 inch foam - will it be able to support the O27 line overhead

any comments/ recommendations greatly appreciated

I have often used carboard boxes for Christmas layout tunnels and they will hold up the train overhead if you are careful.  I use paper towel tubes cut to the right height as pillars to support the box where it risks sagging.  It won't sag at the edges, usually, unless you cut away a tunnel portal that's too large.   One or more paper towel pillars in the middle will do the rest.

I once built a layout with a huge castle made out of Playmobil standing on four or five cardboard boxes at Christmas.  An O-27 train ran through the castle.  Both the train and castle stood on top of the boxes.  On the lower level, I ran two loops of track beneath the castle, through the boxes.  I cut portals through the boxes and lined them up.  It worked.
