I purchased the newer version of Lionel's post-war turbine #6-8408.  It's absolutely stunning.  However, the sound is anything but.  I wonder if it's possible to install a sound system that would emulate the actual turbine ?  A continuous roar would be acceptable.

Since the sound system seem s to be on the fritz, is it possible to cannibalize it to make it a steady steam sound ?

In the Lionel and Electric Railroad Turbine sound sets, the whooshing sound increases proportional to speed.

AND should be completely off when engine is at rest not moving.  The only steam at rest would be the dynamo, maybe blow-down , relief valves, and whistle.

Now if C&O M-1 or N&W TE1 another story.

"AND should be completely off when engine is at rest not moving.  The only steam at rest would be the dynamo, maybe blow-down , relief valves, and whistle."

Absolutely. The gas turbines (as in UP) would "idle", being internal combustion; the steam turbines - direct drive or turbine-electric (C&O; N&W), being external combustion, would not make major turbine sounds at rest - the "power unit" (boiler/blades) does not "idle".

As far as the actual exhaust sound goes when running down the track, the direct-drive steam, steam-electric and gas-electric turbines should make similar sounds - escaping gases all sound much alike.

So far as I know.  I'd like to know more/hear recordings of the particulars.

Engines with T/G sets, the T/G set are rotating at idle to produce electric power just as with a diesel engine the prime-mover and generators are turning slowly.  The engines with T/G sets are just like electrical utility power plants except at power plants we condense and reuse "all" feed-water/steam.

This is an interesting topic and I have a question that may be a little off-topic.  Some years ago I purchased for my grandson an MTH freight set based on the Penn S2 Turbine.  The set, 30-4037-1, includes a PS2 (5V) Bantam Penn Steam Turbine.  I believe this set includes the same engine as the separate sale 30-1167-1 engine released in 2000.

I have always thought the sounds on this engine were somewhat lame in comparison with other PS2 engines.  Especially the whistle.  I am curious if anyone has downloaded another sound set for this engine which may sound better than the original sound set.  I guess the chuff vs whoosh is less important to me than the sound of the whistle.

By the way, this Bantam engine and the MTH Bantam SP GS-4 I have are great running little engines and have never given us any problems.  I think part of the reason for their great reliability is the fact that they both have what looks like chrome tires on the drivers that NEVER get dirty.  I am surprised these two engines, along with the MTH Bantam NS Class J engine, have not been cataloged in many years.

Thanks for any help!
