I have an upcoming project where the tender is large enough to fit twin 50mm speakers. I'm wondering if twin 50mm speakers (two 8ohm speakers wired in parallel) will give a sound improvement over a single 4ohm 50mm speaker. I'm just curious if the PS3 steam sound files have enough base to benefit from twin speakers. Has anyone tried it?

the onboard amp seems to be the limit to me. I put 2 speakers in an engine and it sounded about the same to me overall.
Changing the quality to a better speaker produced the best results for me so far. That was in a 3rd Rail Niagara.
I have to imagine that it's different with each engine. Getting the best results with the veranda type tender has eluded me so far. I need to create a better chamber to house the speaker in that tender. I believe that will help get better results.
If you have room for a pair of 50s, try running a Tang Band module instead. Either a 1815SA or 1931S would fit in approximately the same space. Fantastic speakers in a ported enclosure, 4 ohms work with PS3. You can buy them from Parts Express
You want to be cognizant of the efficiency of the speakers you select, that's a major factor in the volume of sound you'll get from one or two speakers.
I'll be working with an ATSF 25K gallon oil tender for this project. It's the really large one used behind 2900 class 4-8-4s and 5011 class 2-10-4s, so plenty of room for twin 50mm speakers. I've been using this Visaton 4ohm speaker with upgrades and it gives really nice, clear, sound reproduction:
FRWS 5 - 4 OHM Visaton GmbH & Co. KG | Audio Products | DigiKey
The 8ohm version has the same specs, so I'm curious if two of them in parallel will give better sound reproduction.
FRWS 5 - 8 OHM Visaton GmbH & Co. KG | Audio Products | DigiKey
It should do a better low end.
I put 2 8ohm speakers into a one gauge ES44ACH evo I built. One speaker in the custom fuel tank firing down, and one in the radiator section firing up. Overall it sounds like my others.
I haven't done a dual speaker in a tender so I shouldn't have stated what I did. Go for it!
I put a single Peerless 4 ohm into that 3rd Rail Niagara and it sounds great.
I studied work by Ray Manley on his one gauge installs achieving better low end using those (brand) speakers you mention above. It's a decent speaker at a decent price. I've used them (3.5" ? version) in a couple of one gauge engines so far.
I believe creating a proper bass chamber is very important.
I normally get better sound with two speakers in the tender, and I've used the FRWS 5 - 8 OHM with good results, so I suspect two of the similar 4 ohm speakers would kick butt.

Well two 8ohm versions in parallel to get 4ohms, but yes I'll give it a try.
These ATSF 25K gallon tenders have plenty of room for twin 50mm speakers. If it works in my latest project I'll probably go back and retrofit the other's I've done.

NO! I was saying the two of the four ohm in series would be the ticket. Don't put 4 ohms on the Lionel sound boards, they overheat.

Title of the thread: Twin speakers with PS3
Oops sorry, you're right then. Same principle, different impedance.
