There may be pre-wired pins available, I know that Lionel had them for their connectors.  I've yet to try to build something with the PS/3 connectors, but the pins certainly are tiny.

When all else fails or frustrates, I'd consider a separate 2-pin connector, such as Miniatronics or TCS has available, for the backup light, which would probably be a LED/diode pair for directional.  

In situations as you've encountered, I tend to look for the 'easy way out', even if it's not the most elegant. 

BTW, after visiting your layout at the TCA National several years ago, I remain inspired by much of your creativity and expertise!
